Lansing was born in 1929 at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, to shoe salesman Jack Glen Brown (also known as Glen Jack Brown and Glenn Jack Brown) and homemaker Virginia Grace (née Shupa) Brown. She started modeling at the age of 14 and signed a contract with MGM. She graduated from high school on the set.
Her family moved to Los Angeles in 1940, where she gave birth to her half-brother Larry Vernon Loveland, half-sister Tammera Loveland, and half-brother Kim Loveland. She was later known by the surnames of her stepfathers, Wassmansdorff and Loveland.

She was survived by her mother, half-brother, half-brother, half-sister and paternal grandmother.
