JoJo Siwa Says She Has Not ‘Stuck a Hair Bow’ in Her Hair in 2 Years

It’s the end of the JoJo Siwa arc era!

In the first episode of her new iHeart podcast, JoJo Siwa nowthe Dance moms alum explained why she wasn’t spotted wearing her fashion statement piece.

“I am 20 years old now. “I haven’t put a bow on my hair in two years,” she admitted. “I don’t mind a hair bow, I just didn’t wear one.”

JoJo Siwa opens up about living with dyslexia: ‘I’m a little confused by letters that look alike’

Siwa continued: “And I still love them. I still love JoJo bows. I love what the JoJo bows mean. I love what they stand for. I love my past wearing every day. I still sometimes stick on little bows.”

“Anyway, it’s been two long years, I haven’t worn it,” she added.

Despite this, the bow is still a key part of the JoJo Siwa brand. During the episode, the performer recalled how a young girl recently approached her and asked, “Are you ‘JoJo with onions and onions?’ ”

The TikTok star said that the phrase caught her off guard because she used to hear it all the time, but now it’s rare.

“I’m not mad about it,” she said, adding that the JoJo arc — and especially its message of acceptance — is still “something I love.”

“I think for me the onion thing is honestly, people would always ask me, ‘When are onions and onions going to go away?’ “, she recalled and added that she even wondered herself. Her response during that time? “I did not know.”

“I had no idea and I … like I said, I’m a firm believer that life just goes its way and we just have to go with it, swing,” she said.

And then, the day after her 18th birthday, something changed.

“I literally said, ‘I don’t want to wear that today.’ And my mom said, ‘OK, then don’t’. And I said, ‘Okay. It’s a good feeling,’ she recalled.

Soon after, Siwa joined the cast Dancing with the stars in 2021, and when a cast member asked her if she would wear her iconic hair combo — side ponytail and bow — during her dances on the show, she replied, “I don’t do that anymore.”

“And then they said, ‘But we really want that iconic JoJo look,’ and I kind of realized, I was like, ‘Wait, this is a bad thing,'” she said.

“It’s not bad to be 18 and wear a bow,” she continued. “Who cares? It’s me. It’s who I am. So I said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to stick that thing in my head, I absolutely will.’ ”

So she put on a bow for the first time as an adult DWTS“comforting” experience with an additional plus: “Today I don’t even have to think about how I do my hair.”

But it was not a permanent return to a recognizable style.

In April 2022, Siwa did a big haircut, making ponytails a no-go and bows much harder to style. She’s since gotten hair extensions, but rarely wears high ponytails — let alone ones with bows. But whether she wears them or not, they will always be a part of her, she said.

“I mean, I don’t mind onions. I love it, I always will.”
