dispute
- In 2016, she launched her own line of bows in partnership with Claire’s, and her bows became a huge hit with primary school students in the UK. However, her bows were banned in many schools after teachers discovered that children could not afford them due to their high price (retailing at around £8 ($10.40) to £12 ($15.60) each), and were bullied by classmates who could afford them. Other reasons her bows were banned were that they were distracting, impaired concentration, and violated school dress codes.
- In June 2019, Siwa’s makeup line fell into trouble after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned her about high levels of asbestos in her makeup kits. In response to the controversy, Claire’s removed the products from its shelves, and Siwa posted a now-deleted YouTube video to address the issue. In the video, she said:
Recently, it was brought to my attention that there was an issue with a product in Claire’s store. I just want to let everyone know that safety is a top priority for me and Nickelodeon no matter what, everywhere, on every product, and everything out there.”
- In December 2019, she posted a photo of her BMW sports car, which was covered in glitter, shooting stars, and JoJo’s face on the hood; it was a Christmas gift she received. Justin Bieber commented “burn it” three times on her post. Soon, her mother pointed out that Justin Bieber burned his own things. After that, Justin received a lot of backlash. Later, Justin apologized on his Twitter, saying,
I have nothing against you guys, I just don’t like the car and the color. I really hope you didn’t take that as malicious or mean.”
- In June 2020, she released the music video for her single “Nonstop” in which she plays a circus ringmaster and her dancers are dressed as animals and circus performers. In one of the dancers, she was dressed as a monkey with her face painted black. This caused huge criticism because blackface is considered offensive in the entertainment industry. Speaking about this, she said,
We are talking about kids dressed up as circus animals! No one in my video is in blackface. It is horrible that anyone could have thought of that in their head. Kids were dressed up in animal costumes, with their faces painted to look like animals, playing the roles of animals. There were zebras, tigers, dogs, clowns, mermaids, everything. I have discussed Black Lives Matter before on social media. I will say it again, to the people in the back, Black Lives Matter, today, tomorrow, yesterday and forever. I am on the right side of history. Stop trying to tie this into something unrelated.”
