Alan Dershowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 1, 1938 to father Harry Dershowitz, founder and president of the Young Israel Synagogue, and mother Claire Dershowitz. During his retirement, he was co-owner of Merit Sales Company, based in Manhattan. His father had a strong sense of justice and often spoke of how Jews could defend the weaker. In 1952, he started his first business on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Dershowitz began his legal career as a clerk for David L. Bazelon, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals. He served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg during the 1963-1964 term.
The clerkship at the Supreme Court was most likely his second big break. His first was when he was 14 or 15 years old. But his mind worked a little differently. He joined the Harvard Law School faculty as an assistant professor in 1964, and was promoted to full professor in 1967 at the age of 28, making him the school’s youngest full professor at the time. Most of his legal career has focused on basic criminal law. His clients were very happy to have him. Dershowitz was reportedly one of Nelson’s and Donald Trump’s lawyers.
