Jon Bon Jovi is detailing how it feels to be back on stage, 19 months after he said he had surgery on a vocal cord injury.
The Bon Jovi frontman, 61, talked about his health at Hulu’s panel for new documentaries Thank you good night at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena on Friday, when he explained that he was “ready to talk” about his vocal cord surgery.
“I pride myself on being a real singer,” Bon Jovi said. “I sang with Pavarotti. I can sing. I learned the trade for 40 years. I’m not a stylist who just barks and howls. I can sing.”
“So when God was taking away my ability and I couldn’t understand why, I joked that the only thing that’s ever been on my nose is my finger – you know, so there’s no reason for any of this,” he added. .

As the “Livin’ On a Prayer” singer explained, one of his vocal cords had “atrophied” — one vocal cord was “as thick as a thumb” and the other “as thick as a little finger.”
So, the strong pushed the weak aside, and I didn’t sing well, he said. “They were taking away my craft.”
Bon Jovi said he luckily met a surgeon who gave him “the ultimate umbilical cord reconstruction implant.” He is now still “on the mend” during 19 months of rehab.
“But regardless, and I say in the movie, and in the last episodes, if I just got my tool back, I could handle the rest,” he said. “I can write you a song, I can perform as well as anyone else. But I have to get my tool back.”

“Friday night was the first time I sang in public,” he said afterward, referring to his MusiCares Person of the Year honor and tribute concert that took place on February 2. “On Saturday morning I woke up for the first time without any more voices in my head. It was just me. And that was the best feeling. It was just me.”
