Jonathan Bennett and Jaymes Vaughan share some words of wisdom for same-sex couples shopping for engagement and wedding rings.

“Create your own tradition”, Mean girls the alum told PEOPLE in an interview as the official host of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration in partnership with KAY Jewelers.

Before tying the knot in March 2022 in Mexico, Bennett, 42, and Vaughan, 40, explain how they collaborated with KAY to create their own personalized wedding ring tradition. Our Jaymes & Jonathan ring, designed by the couple, features a silver band with round-cut diamonds around one side of the ring.

When they got engaged, the diamonds were facing outwards for the world to see. After tying the knot, they turned their bands so that the diamonds sparkled towards them.

“We designed this because we both wanted to have an engagement ring and be excited and say, look, I’m engaged,” says Vaughan, who is one of the hosts of the celebration.

Vaughan adds that since announcing their ring with KAY, he and Bennett have noticed other LGBTQ+ couples using it — and putting their own personal touch on it.

“A couple just messaged me on Instagram a few weeks ago to say they got married and passed the ring out to all the wedding guests so they could put their blessing and their love on it before it came back to them to turn,” True friends of Weho says the star.

He adds, “It’s super cool and really beautiful and super touching, and it’s just about creating your own traditions.”

For Bennett, being able to make this ring allowed him to break heteronormative norms and make the wedding space more inclusive.

“You don’t have to do what’s ingrained in us,” he said Food Network Battle of the Decade he says. “It’s something we grew up with and our parents grew up with. But you can do your own thing, and I think you should, especially with a same-sex couple.”

He adds: “The wedding space is still relatively new to us, so do your thing, keep it in mind. Don’t be afraid to do your own thing because it’s your love story. It should be yours.”
