Biography of Jonathan David

Jonathan David was born in New York on January 14, 2000 (age 23) to Haitian parents and moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti when he was three months old. He and his parents immigrated from Haiti to Canada when he was six years old and lived in Ottawa. As a child, David attended the Francophone public school École secondaire publique Louis-Riel. He attributes his success to this: “Having the ball at my feet all the time when I was at Louis Riel helped me.”

David started playing organized soccer at the age of 10 with Gloucester Dragons SA from Ottawa. A year later he joined Ottawa Gloucester SC, where he played for the Hornets team until 2015. He joined Ottawa Internationals SC in 2016. David grew up never watching soccer in Canada or Major League Soccer. He had no ambition to play professionally in the United States. Instead, he only played professionally in Europe.

Career

  • David joined Belgian side Gent in January 2018. On 4 August 2018, he made his professional debut against Zulte Waregem, scoring a stoppage time goal to save a 1–1 draw. Just five days after making his league debut, David came on as a second-half substitute in the Europa League third qualifying round match against Jagiellonia Biaystok, scoring in the 85th minute to give his side a 1–0 win.
  • Three days later, Jonathan David extended his goal streak by coming on as a 71st-minute substitute to score two late goals in a 4-1 league win over Waasland-Beveren. Gent signed David until 2022 after he scored five goals in his first five games.
  • In September 2019, he extended his contract for another year, until 2023. Gent president Ivan de Witte said in the January 2020 transfer window that there is a lot of interest from bigger teams in David, and his value is estimated at 20 million euros.
  • On August 11, 2020, Lille announced the signing of Jonathan David on a five-year contract. David is said to have cost €30 million, making him the most expensive Canadian transfer to date. On 22 August, he made his debut for Lille against Rennes in the Ligue 1 season opener. After a difficult start to the season, David scored his first goal for Lille against Lorient on 22 November, scoring the winner in a 4–0 triumph.
  • After going scoreless in the previous seven games, David scored in extra time against Reims to move LOSC level on points with PSG at the top of the table. David scored as Lille beat Bordeaux 3-0 on 3 February 2021. Continuing his hot streak, David scored his first career Ligue 1 brace against Nantes on 7 February. After scoring just two goals in the first half of the 2020-21 season, David’s goal was his fifth in as many games.
  • On 3 April 2021, he scored the winner in Lille’s 1–0 away triumph against Paris Saint-Germain, the club’s first away win over PSG since April 1996.
  • Jonathan David scored the winner in Lille’s 2-1 away win against Anger on 23 May. David finished his first season with 13 league goals, 11 of which came after the turn of the year. That included a late winner against PSG at the Parc des Princes and a late double against Marseille, establishing himself as a key component of Lille’s title challenge and one of the league’s most in-form players.
  • Jonathan David was discovered by Canada’s youth national team program in 2015 after attending multiple U-15 camps and was frequently invited to Canada’s U-17 camps leading up to the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship. David went on to represent Canada in the tournament, scoring a hat trick against Suriname in the final group game.
