News about Jonathan Hatami

In an effort to defeat embattled District Attorney George Gascón in 2024, the Los Angeles County Assistant District Attorney has announced his candidacy for the position.

In connection with the murders of 10-year-old Anthony Avalos and 8-year-old Gabriel Fernández, prosecutor Jonathan Hatami became world famous. Hatami, who was also a victim of child abuse, believes that these cases are personal to him and that these triumphs inspire him to think more broadly.

He told Eyewitness News: “I would make sure to punish a significant and violent crime.” “I would make sure that everyone in Los Angeles knows that they will be held accountable for their misdeeds. However, I also want people who commit less serious crimes to know that we want to find a way for them to succeed.”

Hatami said he would include gun violence improvements, send deputy district attorneys back to parole hearings and allow only zero bail for misdemeanors lower on his list of priorities.

It’s a clear allusion to his rival and superior, Gascón, who won the job in 2020 on a platform of sweeping criminal justice reform. Hatami argued that Gascón first barred prosecutors from asking for bail for suspects charged with nonviolent crimes, which included some allegations of domestic violence and child abuse.

In May 2022, amid intense impeachment efforts, Gascón backtracked and rescinded the decree. However, the recall effort failed because organizers were unable to collect enough authentic petition signatures to bring the issue to voters. After an unsuccessful first attempt in 2021, it was the second attempt to qualify for a recall election that could unseat Gascón.

Hatami tweeted Saturday: “When George Gascón ran for district attorney, he supported defunding the police and eliminating school and metro police.” “He has consistently promoted risky language, putting the lives of many police officers at risk. His group called the police “murderers” and “barbarians.”

The disapproval continues to reverberate, as evidenced by a lawsuit filed by Hatami, alleging that Gascón discriminated against him for speaking out, denied him promotions and slandered him.

“That’s exactly how it will be. He’s going to have to choose between Hatami and George Gascón in this match,” he said. Asked if the case seemed “too personal,” Hatami said, “That’s why I’m running, which is separate from the lawsuit.” I don’t think he’s running. because I have something special against George Gascón.
