Jonathan Pedneault Career

In 2008, Pedneault travelled to Chad and crossed Sudan’s Darfur with rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement to report on the humanitarian catastrophe and co-produce a CBC/Radio-Canada documentary. This was just a few months before Pedneault turned 18 years old. In order to run for the Liberal Party of Canada nomination in his home riding of Longueuil—Pierre-Boucher, Pedneault resigned from the University of Ottawa in 2009.

Despite promises from the party’s then-leader Michael Ignatieff that the party would have open nominations in all ridings without a sitting MP, Denis Coderre, the lieutenant of the party in Quebec, rejected Jonathan Pedneault’s candidature and nominated a candidate. As a result, Pedneault co-wrote an opinion piece for La Presse pleading with Ignatieff to uphold his pledge to democratise the party.

Between 2010 and 2012, Jonathan Pedneault co-directed The New Great Game, a 52-minute documentary about the multi-polarization of marine zones in the Middle East that was created for CBC/Radio-Canada, Al-Jazeera, and Arte. Following that, Pedneault oversees filming and reporting in the region, obtaining access to both Somali pirates in the Hobyo town of Galmudug and NATO anti-piracy naval operations cruising the Indian Ocean.

When Pedneault was assigned to cover the 2011 Egyptian Revolution for L’Actualité 8, he was attacked by a sizable crowd. He was hospitalised after suffering a head injury while attempting to aid American journalist Greg Palkot before being taken into custody alongside Fox News reporters by the Egyptian army. The US State Department’s efforts result in their release and swift deportation.

A 20-year-old journalist from Canada managed to get to the armoured personnel carrier and climbed on top of it, according to Palkot in an interview with GQ. He attempted to pull me over the edge of the armoured vehicle after seeing me with a face full of blood and a body full of blood from being beaten. In exchange for his assistance, he was shot and had to flee, which he, fortunately, managed to do.

Later that year, to cover the western and eastern fronts of the Libyan Civil War, Jonathan Pedneault returned to the area. Days after Muammar Gaddafi’s government is overthrown by opposition forces, he embarks on a trip to Tripoli with James Foley and Jon Lee Anderson. Together with Matthew Van Dyke and a fourth reporter, Foley and Pedneault reported from a hotel room in Tripoli as the rebels continued to fight pockets of Gaddafi supporters there.

South Sudanese journalists were educated by Pedneault in 2013 to cover events for Radio Tamazuj in Juba and Malakal. He continued to teach journalists for the Network of Journalists for Human Rights in the Central African Republic the next year before becoming caught up in fatal inter-communal violence. In that year, Pedneault’s close friend Camille Lepage was killed.

Then, Pedneault returns his body to his family. Pedneault persuaded warlord Ali Darassa and anti-balaka leaders in the town of Bambari to approve the building and running of a multi-faith radio station as part of his later work on media development in the CAR.
