Jonathan Van Ness got fired up for A strange eye season 9 in a “shell” way.
When the makeover guru, 37, wasn’t helping the characters on the Netflix series with life-changing transformations, Van Ness tells PEOPLE that they consumed an alarming amount of craze while filming in Las Vegas.
“I ate so many legs in Las Vegas I almost got gout,” Van Ness says of their food obsession during Season 9, which premieres Dec. 11.
“I had to talk to my doctor about it because I became really obsessed with Alaskan king crab drumsticks and snow crab drumsticks,” he adds. Become curious podcast host, who had surgery in 2023 for an unknown medical problem.
The Mayo Clinic describes gout as “a common and complex form of arthritis,” which can be acquired if someone consumes too many purine-rich beverages or foods — such as seafood — that increase uric acid levels.

“I used to order crab legs like Bethenny Frankel into salons and eat buttered crab legs out of plastic bags outside the salon in the midday Vegas heat,” Van Ness says, referring to Frankel’s love of seafood.
Another thing that Van Ness admits they did a lot of while filming the new season of the unscripted show was wearing green eyeshadow.
Except for the possible appearances of crab legs and green eyeshadows, season 9 A strange eye will introduce a new cast member — with interior design expert Jeremiah Brent replacing the departing Bobby Berk, who previously handled home renovations since the show’s 2018 reboot.

Ahead of filming the new season, fashion guru Tan France told PEOPLE that it will be “interesting to see how this dynamic goes” with Brent, adding, “However, we all know [Jeremiah]we all love him, so we feel really confident about this season. I think it will be great.”
Brent, 40, agreed, saying The house is beautiful in March, “We’re all in a group chat. We are having the best time of our lives.”
“Everyone’s heads and hearts are in the right place,” he added. “It’s really healthy right now and I think we’re all really excited about this season.”
Meanwhile, with the Season 9 premiere on the horizon amid the political climate, Van Ness shared a mantra for viewers to stay hopeful.
“[My mantra] is from the movie classic, which is ‘Just Keep Swimming,'” Van Ness tells PEOPLE, nodding to the popular Search None quote.
A strange eye Season 9 begins streaming on Netflix on December 11th.
