When she was 9 months old, her family immigrated to Canada. She grew up in Toronto and Brampton. She attended Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton, Canada. During high school, she studied Western classical music at the Ontario Conservatory of Music. After returning to India, she even received training in Indian classical music. She holds a degree in health sciences and received an honors degree in business administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.

At the age of 17, Jonita collaborated with North American musician Akash Gandhi and Indian musician Sahil Khan to create covers of popular Bollywood songs, which were published on By Akash ·On the Youtube channel “88keystoeuphoria” created by Akash Gandhi.
She has also performed with Sonu Nigam at concerts in Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Caribbean. In 2013, she made her Bollywood debut as a singer with the song “Chennai Express” from the movie “Chennai Express”.
She made her Bengali film debut as a singer with the song “E Mon Aajkal” in the movie “Majnu (2013)”.
She first appeared in AR Rahman’s studio album “Raunaq (2014)”, after which she collaborated with him in several other projects.

- She even passed the entrance exam for medical students but later chose not to become a doctor because it would not have given her enough time to sing.
- Her song “Breakup Song” from the film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)” became an instant hit upon its release. She said the song became a “benchmark” in her career because wherever she went, people asked her to sing it and people considered her the singer of Bollywood’s “breakup song.”
