Olympian Jordan Chiles will publish her debut book next year. The gold medalist, 23, announced exclusively to PEOPLE that she will be publishing her new memoir I am that girl in spring 2025 through Harper Influence, an imprint of HarperCollins. Chiles gained global attention as an Olympic gymnast and member of Team USA after joining the team in 2013. In her memoir, the athlete talks about the “psychologically and physically demanding” realities of the sport, including the racism she faced as a black athlete in a predominantly white gymnastics team. field, her experience with “eating issues” as a child, and the lasting bonds she made with her teammates, including Simone Biles, who wrote the foreword memoirs.

I am that girl will also share Chiles’ experiences competing at the Olympics, including the moment she was stripped of her bronze medal in Paris 2024. During the floor exercise competition on August 5, where Chiles initially finished fifth, her coach filed an appeal, citing a scoring error.

On 11 August, Chiles was ordered to forfeit her bronze medal after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), following an appeal by Romanian gymnasts, found that Chiles’ coach had appealed four seconds too late in an attempt to correct her result. In September, Chiles’ lawyers filed an appeal on her behalf with the Federal Court of Switzerland to overturn the CAS decision.

Although Chiles called the incident “one of the most challenging moments of my career,” I am that girl is ultimately a tribute to the “power of perseverance,” according to a press release shared with PEOPLE.
