Josh Brolin Recalls Barbra Streisand's Response When He Once Asked Her for a Glass of Wine: 'Aren't You a Drunk?'

Josh Brolin reflects on the candid communication he had with Barbra Streisand about his drinking.

In an interview published on Saturday, November 16, with The Times to promote his upcoming memoir Under the truckthe There is no country for old men the actor spoke about his sobriety and an incident involving his famous stepmother.

On one occasion before he got sober, Josh (56) went to the home of his father James Brolin (84) and Streisand and asked for a glass of wine. Streisand, 82, who married James in 1996, replied: “But aren’t you a drunk?”

“There’s nothing that I ultimately value more in anybody than the ability to just say it, regardless of the reaction,” he said.

Josh got sober in 2013 after waking up outside his house after a night of drinking and later kept vigil at his grandmother’s deathbed reeking of alcohol. At that moment, he realized that he was halfway through his life and wanted to live the second half sober.

“I knew that would be the last time I drank,” he said The Times. He went to rehab and joined Alcoholics Anonymous. “I love being older. It’s like a great excuse to finally say, ‘OK, just take it easy, you don’t have to spin all the time,'” he added.

“I like being sober. I’m having more fun,” he said elsewhere in the interview. “There’s nothing I’ve been through, and I’m absolutely sure it wouldn’t have been worse if I’d been drinking.”

His memoir is full of anecdotes and insights into relationships, addiction, love and fatherhood, according to publisher HarperCollins. “Tackles the mysteries of life and death in a way that will surprise readers, Under the truck is a bold and engaging memoir by a born writer.”
