Josh Brolin Says It Was ‘Awesome’ Bringing His Kids to the Desert to Film Dune: Part Two: ‘Nothing But Sand’

Josh Brolin took his daughters to Arrakis during filming Dina: The second part — well, almost.

On Tuesday, the 56-year-old actor appeared on Good morning America and talked about his experience shooting the second part of the sci-fi film. Boasting that the cast and crew filmed on location for scenes meant to illustrate the desert planet of Arrakis, Brolin reveals that he brought his two young children with him.

“I love the desert! I brought my family there, I brought my children. My three-year-old and five-year-old, who were 2 and 4 at the time,” he says.

“We climbed the dunes every day. It was great. When you first end up in the desert, you feel so insignificant because we were two and a half hours south of Abu Dhabi. So it was a hundred kilometers of just sand.”

Josh Brolin shares a rare photo of dad James with daughter Westlyn at her first dance recital

Brolin shares his daughters with his wife Kathryn Boyd Brolin (35).

In May, the star posted a series of adorable photos of her daughter Westlyn Rain’s first dance recital on her Instagram Story. In the photos, Westlyn wore a purple, sparkly leotard with fringes and black patent leather shoes.

“I’m so proud of my little girl at her first dance recital 🎉🎉💎💎❤️️,” he wrote alongside one picture.

Brolin also shared a sweet photo of Westlyn and daughter Chapel with both of their grandfathers. Brolin’s father, James Brolin, 82, carried Chapel while Kathryn’s father, Britt Boyd, held Westlyn. “Grandpa(s) love,” Brolin wrote alongside the photo.

Brolin and Kathryn married in September 2016. The actor also has two grown children – daughter Eden, 30, and son Trevor, 35 – from his first marriage to actress Alice Adair.

The wedding also prompted Brolin to reflect on the experience of watching his older children build lives while still raising his young.

“I am so grateful for this time and this place to be able to have this time,” he wrote. “I have young children to re-raise, entire lives to monitor and be sensitive to.”

Brolin also shared how much it meant to him to continue to be an active parent in Eden’s life and to be able to spend such an important day with her.

“I didn’t grow old and go to Italy. I stayed and walked my daughter across the grassy countryside to the engagement – a groom with tears streaming down his cheeks – and I melted with it, in it,” he wrote.
