Josh Peck's 2 Kids: All About Max and Shai

Josh Peck rose to fame playing one half of the brother duo in the Drake & Joshbut in real life he is now a loving father of two sons: Max and Shai.

The Nickelodeon alumnus and his wife Paige O’Brien welcomed their first son, Max Milo Peck, in December 2018. The couple’s second child, Shai Miller Peck, was born in October 2022.

After welcoming his sons, Josh told Distractify that he became less selfish and focused solely on his career, channeling that love into his children instead.

“Until you have a baby, hopefully you’ll meet someone great and you’ll grow together and become a little less selfish, but I never thought I’d be able to have that level of love and joy [of] putting someone in front of me,” he told the newspaper in June 2023.

He continued, “I feel like with these two kids of ours, the most uncomfortable part is that every trope, every saying, every slogan, every colloquialism becomes true. And the way I used to shudder when I’d hear my mom say, ‘That’s the kind of love you’ll never know.’ My Jewish mother was absolutely right.”

Josh and O’Brien’s first child, Max, was born on December 29, 2018. Josh announced his birth with a simple Instagram post of his newborn wrapped in a hospital blanket and hat, alongside a caption with his name.

When Max was an infant, O’Brien struggled to produce enough milk to nurse him, she told PEOPLE in April 2023.

“I really intended to breastfeed when we had Max, and then I quickly realized that I was never producing enough milk,” she said. “I kind of drove myself crazy for a few weeks, trying to really force it, and then we went on formula alone and I had to try a bunch of different ones until we found what worked for us.”

It took time for the couple to find a balance in parenting, but now they’ve found that their styles work well together.

“Josh is really hands-on and really helpful, which I’m really grateful for, and he and Max kind of have a very similar energy to them,” she explained. “For me, I’m definitely a little more relaxed and calm. I think it’s just a good balance of our different strengths.”

Josh also took the lead in raising Max in the Jewish faith from an early age, celebrating holidays like Hanukkah and Passover together. When he was only 3 months old, Josh also dressed his young son as a chicken for Purim.

Now that Max is 5, he’s developing new interests, like reading, O’Brien told PEOPLE.

“So now at night when we read books, he reads them to me instead of me reading them to him, which is a crazy thing,” she said. “He’s really gotten into puzzles lately. His mind is always working.”

As for whether he had already introduced Max to his work, Josh told Morning Honey in November 2023 that he had started, but Max was still too young to fully understand his fame.

“My son has seen a few things I’ve done,” he said Oppenheimer said the actor. “He thinks that these are only very well made domestic films. I’m still not sure he can relate to what a legend his father is!”

Josh and O’Brien announced they were expecting their second child in June 2022 when O’Brien posted a photo of herself hugging her baby bump in a pink dress. Josh jokingly commented below the photo: “Is it mine or not?”

Shai was born four months later on October 14, 2022. Josh announced his birth with a sweet Instagram photo of Max sitting on a bed with his little brother sleeping next to him, once again captioning the post with his full name.

Shai quickly proved to be a bad sleeper, and Josh joked that he had a “vendetta against sleep” in an Instagram post. The child’s parents decided to alternate who would get up to feed him when he woke up at night, which led to difficult evenings for both of them.

“We were shifters,” Josh told Distractify. “And so from one to six [in the morning]I’d just crash in the guest room just because I’d have work to do or something, just to calm down a little bit.”

“And after a while, our son would wake up at 6 and come join me to watch, you know, like Sesame Street or some cartoon in our guest room,” he continued. “He finally said, ‘I really like that this is your room, Dad.’ ”

Although Josh and O’Brien were initially worried about how Max would adjust to a sibling after being an only child for four years, How I met your father the actor said that the little boy could not love his brother more.

“My son is a great older brother. He runs into his room as soon as he gets home from school and wants to tell me about his day and give me a hug,” he told Morning Honey.

He added that when O’Brien planned to go to Northern California and Josh was supposed to stay home with the kids, O’Brien asked Max if he wanted to go with him, to which he replied, “If Shai doesn’t come, I don’t I don’t want to go!”

Raising young children has brought the fun of the holidays back to Josh, who said Christmas and Halloween are “some of the best nights” for family and kids.

“When you grow up, you get over it, and then you have kids and you can enjoy all these new things through their eyes,” he said. “It’s fun to see them enjoy themselves and it brings the family together.”
