Josie and the Pussycats Stars Reunite 23 Years Later and Say a Sequel Would ‘Be Super Cool’

It’s time for the band to get back together!

On Friday, Rachael Leigh Cook and Tara Reid reunited at Awesome Con in Washington, DC to discuss their now-iconic 2000s film, Josie and the Cats23 years later.

In a conversation moderated by PEOPLE’s Dory Jackson, the duo addressed several aspects of the film, including their incredible on-screen wardrobe and the pop-rock songs the fictional band sang. They also discussed who they would choose to play them in the movie reboot.

“Beyoncé,” joked Cook, 42, after earlier comments that the Grammy winner had already auditioned for the role of Rosario Dawson.

Instead of picking another big-name star, Reid had a different suggestion: “Us!”

“All rock bands get back together, right? It happens,” Reid, 48, continued as the crowd cheered. “I think we should remake it with this cast. That would be great!”

Reid added, “Let’s start a campaign.”

Reflecting later on the panel on the film’s legacy, Cook expressed her gratitude for Josie and the kitties’ a loyal fan base that helps keep him going after all these years.

“You are the proof that the film worked all these years later,” she said. “This is all about making that movie. So, thank you!”

PEOPLE broke the news in January that Cook and Reid would reunite with costar Dawson, 44, for the weekend-long event. Although Dawson was unable to take the stage with her former co-stars on Friday, she was scheduled to join them for a group photo and sign autographs for those in attendance. The Ahsoka the actress should also participate in ua Star Wars panel alongside Hayden Christensen on Saturday.

Josie and the Cats, based on the Archie Comic series of the same name, debuted in 2001 to poor reviews and poor box office. However, the campaign film became a cult classic in the years that followed.

The satirical musical comedy also starred Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo and Missi Pyle.

“If this movie came out now, it would be huge,” Reid said during Friday’s panel. “But I really feel like this movie was ahead of its time.”

As 2021 marks the film’s 20th anniversary, the lead trio hosted a virtual reunion to reflect on the experience. “I’m thrilled that people have continued to see our film and that it’s just kind of gained traction over the years. That’s incredibly cool,” Cook said.

“Especially because I think he was way ahead of his time,” Dawson added. “You look at it now, and it so resonates with the moment we’re in, but at the time, I think it was hard for people to fully appreciate the satire that it was.”
