Missed Red Velvet’s performance in North Korea
In 2018, Red Velvet was selected to visit Pyongyang with other Korean artists and perform a historic performance from March 31st to April 3rd. The day before the performance, media reports stated that Joy would not participate in Red Velvet’s event, sparking controversy. It is said that some media revealed that the Korean government was not aware of Joy’s absence, but SM Entertainment officially notified the government one day before departure and informed the media of the matter. According to reports, the situation further escalated when Joy attended the Red Velvet concert in Japan (March 28-29) and the SM Town concert in Dubai (April 6) after adjusting her TV drama schedule. Despite her efforts, Joy couldn’t even attend the SM Town concert in Dubai due to her theater commitments. It was also reported that SM Entertainment informed the government during discussions that Joy may not be able to participate in the Pyongyang event and has been approved to send Red Velvet as a four-member group.
Alleged misconduct against airline employees
In March 2022, some airline employees accused Red Velvet’s Irene, Joy, and Yeri of rude behavior at the airport and on the plane. A Korean Air flight attendant shared a post online that read:
One time I was on the same flight as Red Velvet and Irene, Joy and Yeri were very rude. They treat the flight attendants like we are their servants. The other 2 members were friendly. But I don’t understand why idols generally think they are special. ”
