Juan Merchan (born 1963) is an American judge and lawyer. He is now an acting judge of the Supreme Court of the District of New York. He has been actively practicing law for about three decades.

Career
Juan Merchan started his legal practice in 1994 after obtaining his law degree. That same year, he began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Trial Division of the New York County District Attorney’s Office.
After four years in that position, in 1998 he was promoted to the Department of Investigations, where he remained for almost a year. He began working for the New York State Attorney in 1999 and remained there until 2006.
He began his career as a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in charge of the Nassau County region. He was eventually promoted to Assistant Attorney General for Affirmative Litigation (Nassau and Suffolk County) and Assistant Attorney General (Nassau County) over the next seven years.
In August 2006, he began serving as a Bronx County Family Court judge upon appointment. During his nearly three-year tenure, he primarily handled juvenile delinquency cases, PINS petitions, and designated felonies.
Juan left the Bronx Family Court after Governor David Peterson appointed him to the Court of Claims in April 2009. At the same time, Judge Ann Pfau appointed him as acting judge of the New York County Supreme Court during the criminal term.
Although he continues to serve as an acting judge, his term as a Court of Claims judge expired in 2018. During his career, he has tried major criminal trials involving the likes of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon.
