Julia Gutman News
With a picture of singer-songwriter Jessica Cerro, better known by her stage name Montaigne, artist Julia Gutman received the 2023 Archibald Prize.
For the $100,000 prize, the winning oil painting that combined textiles and needlework on canvas bested 56 other contenders. Head in the sky, feet on the ground is the title of the piece of art.
Gutman, 29, is just the 11th woman to win the Archibald Prize, making her one of the youngest artists to do so. She will likely struggle to maintain her footing following the victory. She was thrilled to hear the news when director of the Art Gallery of NSW Michael Brand called.
“Amazed, perplexed, but extremely thrilled. It’s utterly bizarre, to be honest. I’m really pleased to be employed at a moment when the voices of young women are being acknowledged, added Gutman.
The artist and Montaigne were longtime friends, and the artist claimed that both of them preferred to try new things to following the rules. One of the most distinguished awards in the Australian art scene, Gutman is the award’s 100th recipient.
“The 100th Archibald will be given out in 2023. I wonder what happened to the judges after they failed to select a winner in 1964 and 1980. stated Mr. Brand.
Doris Bush Nungarrayi received the $40,000 Sulman Prize for her acrylic-on-linen piece Mamunya ngalyananyi (Monster approaching).
Nungarrayi’s picture features a number of Mamus, threatening spirits that terrorise the Anangu people of central Australia.
With an Inma acrylic on linen piece that is more than three metres across, Zaachariaha Fielding took home the Wynne Prize. The artist, who is a first-time finalist, painted a scene of the noises of Mimili, a small settlement in the APY Lands.
Gutman was a finalist for the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize and participated in the Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
For the first time ever, there were 30 more pieces by women than by males (27) chosen as Archibald finalists this year. There were 38 finalists chosen out of a total of 101 entries by Indigenous artists, including entries for the Wynne and Sulman prizes.
The artworks will be on display at the Art Gallery of NSW from this coming Saturday until September 3 before going on tour until June of the following year.
