Julia Montgomery put her sassiness into playing Stephanie Tanner Full house.
Montgomery, 64, played the future adult version of Stephanie Tanner on Full house episode “It’s better if they weren’t days.” On January 8, the actress was a guest on the Rewatch podcast How rude, Tanneritos and spoke with hosts Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber about studying and playing the role of Stephanie.
Revenge of the Nerds the actress recalled imitating Stephanie’s character, from using the iconic ’90s-style curls Stephanie sported to her sassy catchphrase.
“The hair worked. Absolutely,” Montgomery told Sweetin and Barber. “I had so much hair then.”

Montgomery — who even met the ABC sitcom’s creator, Jeff Franklin, before filming Full house episode — explained that practicing for the role and studying the character of Steph was quite different than it is now, with YouTube readily available. But she saw from the episodes that Steph’s peculiar mannerisms are not always easy to recognize.
In the last season of the sitcom Cheers, Montgomery played a similar role in which she impersonated Diane Chambers’ character Shelley Long. She used this to her advantage as she prepared to play the future version of Stephanie.

Montgomery also had another strategy up her sleeve: “I would watch the show without dialogue.”
It helped her replicate Steph’s mannerisms, but the actress admitted she still regrets her portrayal.

“…I’m mad at myself for not getting more hands,” The next generation the actress told Sweetin and Barber.
Steph’s famous catchphrase “how rude” required dedicated practice, including taking it apart piece by piece to make it as close to the real thing as possible. Montgomery said she studied it in “different ways,” first watching it on mute and later practicing her voice.
After delivering the iconic line, Montgomery’s confidence in the role soared.
“When we went to the mall or whatever, and I kind of skipped it, I was like, ‘Okay, that was good,'” Montgomery said, recalling filming the episode as an adult version of Stephanie.
