Julia Roberts Says She Would Love to Do a My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel

Julia Roberts has starred in some iconic romantic series over the years, but only one tops her list when it comes to sequels.

During the performance at Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that aired on Thursday, a viewer asked the Oscar-winning actress to pick a movie of hers that she would like to make a sequel to. And her answer came quickly.

“That’s a really good question and I’ve never been asked that,” Roberts, 56, said before choosing My best friend’s wedding.

The comedy was a worldwide box office hit when it was released in June 1997. Directed by PJ Hogan, it follows Roberts as Jules, a food journalist who realizes she is in love with her longtime best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) after he discovers he is engaged. new love, Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Of course, spoiler alert — it didn’t end well for Jules, as Michael ended up choosing Kimmy. But the richness of the characters and the dynamics between them means there’s plenty of material to explore for a sequel, as Roberts told Andy Cohen, 55.

“There are so many people in it,” she said, noting that she would like to “see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going…”

“I’m certainly not in the decision-making process,” said Mulroney — who worked with Roberts on the Amazon Video thriller Homecoming in that time.

“I was clear from the beginning, I was clear from 1997 that I was ready to continue. So I’m on the record,” he said.

The cast reunited in 2019 for Entertainment Weeklyedition of the romantic comedy, reminiscing about the shoot and imagining where their characters would be now. Roberts said that wedding saboteur Jules would probably be a marriage counselor.

“Whoever can’t, should learn,” she joked.
