James Bond Producer Says They ‘Haven’t Even Begun’ Work on New Movies After Daniel Craig’s Exit

James Bond fans will have to wait a little longer to see the next evolution of the franchise.

In an interview with Guard announced on Saturday, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli gave an update on where they are in the sequel to the action-spy saga following the end of Daniel Craig’s 15-year tenure as 007, which began in 2006. Casino Royale and concluded with 2021 No time to die.

“Daniel gave us the ability to explore the emotional life of a character … and also the world was ready for that,” said Broccoli, 63. “I think these movies reflect the times they’re in, and they have a long, long way to go.” we’re reinventing it for the next chapter, and we haven’t even started.”

She also told the outlet that when casting Craig, now 55, “they wanted to focus on what a 21st century hero would look like.”

“I’m coming back to Golden eye when everyone was saying, ‘The Cold War is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, there’s no need for Bond, the whole world is at peace and now there are no villains’ – and boy were they wrong!” Broccoli also said, referencing the 1995 Bond film in which Craig’s immediate predecessor, Pierce Brosnan, played the famous fictional spy.

Idris Elba Says James Bond Rumors Are ‘Just That’: ‘They Were Never True’

Little has been announced about future Bond films, although longtime series producer Michael G. Wilson said back in October 2022 that “an attempt to visualize” younger actors in the role never worked.

“Remember, Bond is already a veteran. He’s had some experience … He’s a person who’s been through the wars, so to speak,” Wilson, 81, said in part. “He’s not a high school kid you can bring in and start. So works for thirtysomething.”

Actors such as Idris Elba and Taron Egerton have said they are not expected to play Bond, while back in August Aaron Taylor-Johnson shrugged off reports that he was a frontrunner to play the next 007.

Despite a campaign by fans to make the superspy a more diverse cast of actors or women of color, Broccoli killed off any chance of a Bond lady. Instead, she believes that women should get their own, better characters.

“It can be any color, but it’s male,” Broccoli said Diversity in 2020. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play him. I think women are much more interesting than that.”

As for Craig, Knives out the star admitted in an interview for Los Angeles Times announced last fall that he had given up on continuing the role of Bond for a number of reasons.

“Two things, one for myself and one for the franchise,” the actor said. “One, for the franchise, was that the reset starts again, which [the franchise] done with me. And I said, ‘Well, you have to reset yourself again.’ So let’s kill my character and go find another Bond and find another story. Start in [age] 23, start at 25, start at 30.”

He continued: “The second was to be able to move on. I don’t want to go back. I guess I should be so happy to be asked back, but the fact is I have to move on from that. The sacrifice he made in the film was for love and there is no greater sacrifice. So it seemed a good thing to end.”

Craig also spoke with Radio Times about his time as Bond in September 2021, when he was asked what he thought about a female 007 following in his footsteps.

“There just should be better roles for women and actors of color,” he said in part. “Why would a woman play James Bond when there should be a role as good as James Bond but for a woman?”
