Julianne Hough Didn't Want Ryan Seacrest to Think She Was 'Using' Him During Their Relationship: 'I Overcompensated'

Julianne Hough reflects on the end of her three-year relationship with Ryan Seacrest.

The dancer, 36, opened up about her time with Seacrest, 49, on Monday’s episode Armchair expert podcast with host Dax Shepard.

She explained that because they started dating in the middle of her rise to fame, she was worried it might send the wrong message because Seacrest was already well established in the television and radio industry, including his hosting. american idol.

“The rug was swept out from under me and I was just flying and experiencing things I didn’t even know existed,” Hough said. “But then I had this insecurity like I don’t want anyone to ever think I’m with him for that reason.”

Shepard interjected that it would be easy for people to assume that “you were there to try and get your own attention.”

In the past, Hough said american idol host — described by both the actress and Shepard as a “wonderful guy” — has had experience with people who have “taken advantage” of him, and wanted to make it clear that she’s not doing the same.

“I overcompensated, I was malleable to fit into exactly what someone needed me to be in order for them to be happy,” she explained. “And what I’ve realized over the years is that I don’t know if I’ve ever been truly in love with someone, but I loved the feeling of being loved. And so let me be what I need to be to be loved.”

She continued, “And then because I’m so filled with someone’s love, of course I love you. i love everything I was in love with everyone I dated, but was I? I don’t want to overanalyze it because every person I’ve dated has also been a really good person.”

Hough and Seacrest first met when she went on his radio show with her then-boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, but didn’t start dating until the summer of 2010, after her breakup with Wicks.

After several years together — what is Dancing with the stars alum described as “romantic” and “exciting” — said she and Seacrest ended things in 2013. Knowing that it was important for her to make a name for herself, she revealed that not everyone was on board with her decision.

“I remember when I decided to end things, I had a lot of these Brentwood moms and producers in that world saying, ‘What are you doing?'” she recalled. “And I said, ‘What do you mean?’ They say, ‘Your life is completely set.’ And I said, ‘But I didn’t build it.'”

Hough went on to date hockey player Brooks Laich the same year she split from Seacrest. The two got married in 2017 but later filed for divorce in 2020.

“We lovingly and carefully took the time we needed to make the decision to separate,” they said in a joint statement to PEOPLE at the time. “We share an abundance of love and respect for each other and will continue to lead with our hearts from that place.”
