On September 12, 1990, Subhasis Talapatra became a state of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Member of the Bar Council. Although he is authorized to practice in any of the Northeastern states, he primarily represents clients in civil, constitutional and criminal cases, particularly before the Agartala Bench of the Gauhati High Court. On December 21, 2004, he was appointed as Senior Advocate of the Gauhati High Court. On November 15, 2011, he was sworn in as additional judge of the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as the permanent judge of Tripura High Court on September 13, 2013. He has been serving as the Executive Chairman of Tripura State Legal Services Authority since 2017. In addition, he has served as Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee, Computer Committee and e-Courts Project since 2018, Chairman of the National Law University Establishment Committee and a member of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal. From November 2, 2018 to November 13, 2018, he served as the Acting President Judge of the Tripura High Court. On November 11, 2019, he was reappointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court; he served until November 15, 2019. On June 10, 2022, he was sworn in as a judge of the Orissa High Court.
The collegium of the Supreme Court had recommended Tarapatra’s name for the post of chief justice of the Odisha High Court in July 2023.
