Kami Rita Sherpa

Kami Rita is a famous Nepalese mountaineer known for her outstanding achievements in climbing. He holds the world record for the most successful summits of Mount Everest. As of May 2023, he has climbed Mount Everest 28 times.

Kami Rita was born on Saturday, January 17, 1970 (age 53; as of 2023) in Thame Village, Namche VDC, Solu Khumbu District, Nepal. His zodiac sign is Capricornus. He started school at the age of eight or nine and was the first pupil at Thame Primary School built by the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust in Kim Jong City. He studied to level three and dropped out after four years of study. Later, when he was sixteen, he started going to the Thame Dechen Chokhorling monastery in the village and even thought about becoming a monk. However, he also later quit convent school and began working in the local tourism industry.

He has loved mountaineering since he was a child, and started his mountaineering career as a porter, carrying materials and equipment up the mountain for climbers. He learned the art of mountain climbing and eventually became a mountain guide himself. According to one source, he started delivering goods to Everest Base Camp at the age of twelve, and according to his brother Lhakpa Rita, his first job was as a chef’s assistant at Everest Base Camp in 1992.

Parents and siblings

His father, Mingma Tshering Sherpa, was one of the first professional guides allowed to climb Mount Everest professionally in Nepal in the 1950s. His father’s career was cut short in 1992 when he suffered severe frostbite on an expedition. His mother’s name is Pasang Diki. He has six sisters and an older brother, Lakpa Rita (also spelled Lakpa Rita), who is also a famous mountaineer. Three of his siblings died in infancy.

His wife’s name was Lakpa Jangmu. The couple have a son named Lakpa Sherpa and a daughter studying in Kathmandu, who will not become a mountaineer like their father.

He later climbed it also from N Col – NE Ridge. In 2017, he became the third person to climb Mount Everest 21 times, the others being Apa Sherpa and Puba Tashi Sherpa. On May 16, 2018, he became the first person to climb Mount Everest for the 22nd time. On May 14, 2023, another guide, Pasang Dawa, equaled Kami Rita’s record of 26 summits of Mount Everest. On May 17, 2023, Kami Rita summited Mount Everest for a record 27th time. On May 23, 2023, he summited Mount Everest for the 28th time, setting a record for the number of times climbers summited Mount Everest. He also holds the record for the most climbs, 41 times, over 8,000 meters, Cho Oyu 8 times (2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016), Lhotse once in 2011 and once in K2 (2016). Year 2014.

He has also climbed Baronstadt, Amadablam, Manaslu, Annapurna Quad and Elburs. After working at Alpine Ascents International, he started working for Seven Summit Treks in May 2018. In 2018, he became the brand ambassador of Nepal Cement Company and advertised their product Brij Super Premium OPC. In August 2019, became the brand ambassador and chief expedition consultant of Himalayan Glacier Adventure Travel Company. He has often criticized the Nepalese government for not supporting the Sherpas, saying in an interview,

Our government doesn’t do much for us. We are famous all over the world. Many foreigners know us, but our government doesn’t care about us. ”

  • There is an interesting story behind his name Carmelita. According to his tradition, children were named on the day they were born; however, one of his elder brothers died, so he was named “Kami”, which means “blacksmith”, to please the gods. Rita, meaning his older brother died, was also added to his name.
  • He said in an interview that he will never quit mountaineering and will continue to climb until his body allows it.
