Kangol Kid is an American songwriter, breakdancer, hip-hop producer and emcee. He is best known for being a member of the old-school American hip-hop group UTFO (Untouchable Force Organization) based in Brooklyn, New York City.

While in school, he followed his passion for dance and, along with his dance partner Dr. Ace, began performing as a break dancer in stage shows, naming the duet “The Keystone Dancers”. Later, the two became dancers in the American hip-hop group “Whodini”. Kangol and Doctor Ice later formed their own hip-hop group “UTFO” (Untouchable Force Organization; early UFO). In 1984, music label Select Records signed UTFO and released their debut single “Roxanne Roxanne”. At that time, Kangol did not have any legal representative.
One of UTFO’s most popular albums was released in 1987, titled “Lethal”. UTFO’s debut single gained huge popularity and was voted Best Rap Song at the 1988 Urban Music Awards. UTFO subsequently performed at various stage shows and live events. The group became the first rap group to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City.
Kangol has also worked as a music producer and songwriter. In 1985, he wrote and composed the single “Private Property”. In the same year, he managed and served as a producer for the American rap group “Whistle”. Kangol left UTFO in 1989.

He served as President of the music production company “Kangol’s Kreations, Inc.” and serves as CEO of the public relations company “Kreative Media Group”. He has been invited as a guest lecturer in several schools and colleges. Kangol scored the independent film Nightmare, for which he won the award for Best Film Score. He also works as a voiceover artist and as a columnist for magazines such as Black Beat Magazine and AllHiphop.com. He has worked as a voice-over artist for various television commercials and songs. He once wrote a column called Yo Kangol.

He lost his long battle with colon cancer on December 18, 2021, and died around 3 a.m. while hospitalized in Manhasset, New York. In his last Instagram post, he wrote:
I walked out of rehab…and this guy said hi to me. Maybe you’ve heard of him? ? ? 😂😂😂 Ladies and gentlemen, the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Goat himself, LLCOOL J @llcoolj @rockthebells visited me and heightened my healing energy in a way that no doctor can replicate. Thank you baby brother. I like you. “
Facts/Trivia
- In the early 1980s, his friends called him the “Kangol Kid” because of the Kangol hat he often wore. His iconic hat is in the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
- Kangol said in an interview that he is well versed in the art of language and is an ebony scholar.
- He used to eat non-vegetarian food.
- In 2012, he was honored by the American Cancer Society (as co-founder of the Mama Luke Foundation) for his social service to cancer patients. He organizes various fundraisers to help cancer patients, especially those suffering from breast cancer.
- In 2019, he received the “Honorary Real Dad Award” from Real Dad Network.
