Kansas City Chiefs Beat San Francisco 49ers in Overtime to Win Second Super Bowl in a Row

It took overtime, but the Kansas City Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl!

The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy and win their third Super Bowl in five seasons.

Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a wide open touchdown to win the game.

On their first possession in overtime, the 49ers failed to get into the end zone and had to settle for a short field goal. But it wasn’t enough with the Chiefs getting a touchdown on their own possession.

In the Super Bowl, where both teams’ defenses dominated most of the game, first downs were hard to come by, and early points were even harder.

Kansas City, trailing 10-3 at halftime, came back in the third quarter to score a field goal and then a touchdown after recovering the ball when the 49ers punted.

Mahomes connected with Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a 16-yard touchdown pass to give the Chiefs a 13-10 lead.

Early in the fourth, 49ers running back Brock Purdy connected with wide receiver Jauan Jennings for a touchdown, but kicker Jake Moody’s extra point was blocked, making it 16-13.

Kansas City then hit a field goal, tying the game at 16 with under 5 minutes left.

With less than 2 minutes left, Moody hit a 53-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 19-16 lead.

But the Chiefs came back and kicked a field goal in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game at 19 and send it into overtime.

Sunday’s game was a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won 31-20 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The Chiefs entered Sunday’s game as the defending champions after a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in last year’s Super Bowl. The victory in Super Bowl LVII was the second of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ career and the third for head coach Andy Reid.

The road to Vegas was paved with impressive victories for both teams. While the Chiefs beat the Ravens in Baltimore, the 49ers beat the Detroit Lions in San Francisco.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, Kelce, 34, called the matchup between the two teams “the biggest game of my life.”

“I want this one more than the first one,” he said Thursday during an episode of his and brother Jason Kelce’s podcast, New heights with Jason and Travis Kelce. “There’s no other feeling than being on the field, playing, playing in the Super Bowl. There’s just no better feeling, man, to go out there and find a way to win with your guys.”

“I’m more excited about the challenge than feeling the pressure to go back,” he continued. “Although I want to be part of the NFL players and NFL teams that have done it.”

As always, the event was star-studded and Usher headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show. The performance marked the 44-year-old singer’s second appearance at the Super Bowl, having previously performed with the Black Eyed Peas when the group headlined the halftime show in 2011.

Meanwhile, country music icon Reba McEntire sang the national anthem and rapper Post Malone performed before kickoff.
