Karam Brown’s children, Jason and Christian, have changed his life for the better.
in A strange eye memoirs of a star, Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope, recalled how in 2006 he found court papers on his doorstep asking for child support for then 10-year-old Jason. He recognized the name of his high school friend, Stephanie Brooks, on the paperwork.
After a paternity test confirmed his relationship with Jason, Karamo prepared to meet his son for the first time. The new father had a strong initial bond with Jason, which inspired him to get sober—years later Karamo credited his older child with helping him reach this milestone.
“My son saved my life — and as much as people always say I saved his, he saved my life because he gave me the opportunity to see that there’s more to life than just me,” he told PEOPLE in 2019.
Over time, Karamo became close to Brooks’ other son, Christian, and helped him thrive by taking him into his home. Karamo formally adopted Christian in 2010, and the family moved to Los Angeles in 2011, per Advocate.

After the reality star took a break from television to focus on parenting and social work, Christian inspired Karamo to return to his passion.
“He was writing a paper on how to live your dreams and asked me if my dream was to be a social worker,” Karamo said. Plus 2017. “I said ‘No’. He said, ‘Well, why don’t you follow your dreams?’ I quit my job, maybe two months later.” A few years later, A strange eye premiered on Netflix.

Jason “Rachel” Brown was born on November 27, 1996 and grew up in Houston, Texas, the first part of his childhood with his mother, Brooks.
After Karamo found court documents that revealed he was Jason’s father, he arranged to meet his son, and it wasn’t without fear of the unknown.
“A little voice in my head was saying, Karamo, you don’t have to do that“, he wrote in his memoirs. “You are a child and you should go there and raise a child? Save a life. At the same time, I thought, What if he needs me?”
In February 2019, Karamo told PEOPLE that while he was “scared,” parenting Jason was the best choice he could have made. “There’s something about the first moment you see your child. All the parts of me that I felt were missing were stitched together the moment I saw his face,” Real World: Philadelphia the alum said.
After that, Karamo moved from California to Texas to be closer to Jason. After fifth grade, Brooks gave Karam custody of Jason—a decision that came with the condition that they remain a family.
In their September 2019 cover AdvocateKaramo and Jason opened up about going through a tough time in their relationship when Jason discovered he was pansexual at the age of 21. Karam’s older son admitted that his father’s public persona made him hesitant to share something about his own identity, which Karam “hurt” because he was not among the first to learn of his personal news.
“This is a young man who grew up in a household where his father is a career homosexual…yet in his mind there was still a fear of sharing with me,” the author explained. “When he shared with me that he identifies as pan, I was, first of all, disappointed… I was a little hurt.”

In the end, rapprochement brought them closer. Karamo’s “myriad of feelings” quickly subsided, and he called Jason to tell him how much he was loved. “I should have been honest with my father,” Jason added.
Like his father, Jason is passionate about entertainment, having studied acting at the University of California, Los Angeles, according to Advocate.
“Right now I’m trying to pursue my dreams of being a host and an executive producer, and my dad is literally the biggest supporter I could possibly have in my corner when it comes to helping with that,” he told Slate in May 2018.
In the same year, he starred in a commercial with Karam and his brother Christian, and shortly after that he competed further Celebrity Family Feud. In 2021, Jason partnered with HBO to tell his family’s story for Nuclear family series, and in 2022 he interviewed Janelle Monáe at the West Hollywood Pride celebration, whose father was one of the hosts.
The pair worked together again in October 2022 when Jason went on his father’s daytime talk show, Karamo, and spoke candidly about his struggle with addiction. The father-son duo is also the co-author of two children’s books, I am perfectly designed in 2019 and I feel fine in 2022
The author and content creator showed support for his father with a post on Instagram in August 2022 that featured photos and videos from a taping of Karam’s talk show.
“When I met my dad, the only thing he ever wanted was to be a great dad and have his own daytime talk show,” Jason wrote in the caption. “Congratulations once again @karamo, thank you for being such a wonderful father and a great man everywhere ❤️.”

Brooks welcomed Christian Brown in March 2000, according to Jason’s 2018 Instagram post wishing his brother a happy 18th birthday.
When the television personality connected with Jason, he also became close with Christian. Around this time, Christian got into trouble and moved in with Karam and Jason “to get him back on track.” After seeing Christian thrive in his new environment, Karamo offered to become his legal guardian, and Brooks agreed.
When A strange eye star asked Christian if he wanted to live with him and Jason permanently, there was no suspense. “He said yes and jumped into my arms,” Karamo recalled to PEOPLE.
“He’s amazing,” Christian said of Karamo during a May 2018 interview Parents. “He’s very practical… He’s my favorite guy. If I need help with anything or I’m worried about anything in life or if I just need to talk, I can just go to my dad and … he’ll just talk to me and give me some advice and be loving and supportive. ”

Christian also revealed how Karamo nurtured his interests in creative hobbies, from style to music. During their 2018 interview with Slate, the brothers were asked about shopping with their father, and Christian noted that Karamo “lets us experiment and wear whatever we want.”
He added: “I would say what my dad did, letting me express myself when I was younger and wear whatever I wanted, helped me develop a sense of what style I wanted.”
In addition to asking Karam for life advice, Christian sought his father’s opinion on music as he embarked on a rap career.
“There will be times when I just start rapping to my dad and then I’ll write some stuff. He’ll give me an idea,” he said. “So he’s actually trying to help me be the best I can be and I really appreciate that and I love him a lot for that.”
Christian also revealed to the outlet that when he attended Strange eye witheason 1 with his family in 2018, he got quite emotional seeing his father on screen. “Can I tell you how much I cried at the premiere?” he remembered. “I cried pretty hard.”
While Christian is proud of his father, Karamo said it wasn’t always easy to pursue his career while trying to be a hands-on father. “I’ve been traveling a lot lately for work, which is great… but as a single dad, it’s really hard for me to leave my sons all the time!” he wrote on Instagram in 2018, “Missing these two so much right now!”
