Surf Legend Kelly Slater, Girlfriend Kalani Miller Expecting First Baby Together

Surfing legend Kelly Slater and his longtime girlfriend, Kalani Miller, are going to be parents!

Slater, 52, and Miller, 36, announced the news in a joint Instagram Reel on Tuesday. In the black-and-white video, the couple, who have been in a relationship for 16 years, are seen in swimwear holding hands as they walk towards the ocean.

When they enter the water, the two embrace lovingly as the waves crash against their feet. Miller’s growing baby bump is captured in close-up with waves lapping gently against her exposed belly.

The post was accompanied by Ben Harper’s song “The Three Of Us”. Miller simply titled the post “🤍”.

Several surfers took part in the celebration. “That baby is going to tear. Congratulations!!,” wrote Ben Thomson.

“Big congratulations,” commented Mick Fanning. Filipe Toledo added, “😍 God bless you! I’m glad for you.”

“🙌❤”, wrote Kai Lenny. Meanwhile, Nathan Florence added, “Congratulations!!!”

In a 2019 interview with Graham Bensinger, Miller talked about how she and Slater met at the ASR show in San Diego and whether they were thinking about growing their family.

She said: “At the time me and my sisters were working for Roxy, which is the female counterpart to Quicksilver. And he was at the Quicksilver booth and he was in town for the podium.” She added that Slater had been riding for Quicksilver for 23 years at the time, and although she had worked with the company “for years and years,” they “never crossed paths, never saw each other.”

“It was funny to see ourselves deep into it,” Miller said. “I remember exactly the first time I saw him and it was like time really stood still.”

She went on to share that, “hopefully,” one day the two will welcome a child — or two — together. “I come from a family of four. He is from a family of three. Now when I see people traveling with four kids, I can’t imagine my family or anyone else doing that. It’s crazy. I don’t know, maybe two or three.”

As for whether the pair’s new addition could mean Slater’s retirement after a 31-year career, Miller said in 2019 that it was “maybe,” adding, “I don’t know because it would be interesting to see him try to balance both of those things and whatever , having to put my competitive nature aside for a moment and put the baby first.”

“I think about it a lot,” Slater previously told PEOPLE about possibly retiring. “It’s a reality, because it’s not far for me. My competitive flame smolders, but sometimes it can spark.”

Slater is also the father of Taylor Slater-Kelleher, whom he welcomed in 1996 with Tamara Mitchell, Essentially Sports reported.
