News by Karen Swensen

When WWL-TV host Karen Swensen made the decision to leave her local New Orleans television station, she paid tribute to a large group of people whose stories she told. The acclaimed journalist worked at the station for years while she dealt with her own personal problems.

In late 2000, doctors discovered a benign tumor in Swensen’s uterus. Six weeks before her wedding, she had surgery and doctors warned her that she might never have children. When she had her daughter, medical advances helped change that.

Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. Her own home was destroyed while Swensen was on the air for WWL-TV, covering and reporting on the storm.

Swensen explained to David Begnaud, CBS News’ chief national correspondent, how deeply it affected her.

“I’ve really been going down this rabbit hole for years, I just miss the home we lost, the friends we lost and the way of life we lost,” she added. Swensen would leave WWL-TV to serve as a morning anchor in her hometown of Boston. After a few years, Swensen returned to New Orleans. Her family will soon experience even more difficulties.

“We returned to New Orleans in 2011. Six months later, my husband was diagnosed with advanced cancer… My daughter was only nine years old,” she recalled.

“Everything has a purpose,” he said. “I’ve been through a lot of life changes, and if I can help someone make it a little easier, then it’s all worth it.”

This reason motivated her to leave her lucrative television career and start a company called Life’s About Change. Her business produces only American-made products. The business markets goods created by people whose lives have been changed.

After overcoming personal obstacles, Amanda Claridy and Jenna Collins are now successful potters who pen inspirational quotes on Swensen’s line of coffee mugs. We are living examples of how life can be transformed, says Claridy.

“The doctor who guided my husband and I through his cancer journey had the idea for candles. On the day of her diagnosis, she told him, “I want you to get a candle and then I want you to watch the wax and cancer cells disappear.” ‘Visualize,’ she said,’” Swensen recounted.

He expressed his wish that everyone who buys a candle would see the flame and think about their own inner strength.

For several years, Swensen juggled her work at the television station with her search for exclusive candle vendors. One of those old timers made some of those candles.
