Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York Facebook page, 21-year-old Karishma began her career in January 2014 through a Facebook page called “Humans of Bombay.” She discovered the New York Humans page in 2013 and tried to find a similar page for Mumbai, and when she couldn’t find one, she created a logo and launched her own Facebook page. She started by working with two interns. Mehta approached people on the street and asked to photograph and interview them for the website.
By 2018, her team had grown to six people, based in Mumbai, with freelancers in other parts of India. Humans of Bombay, like the HONY page, has been moved to its own domain humansofbombay.in. In people’s comments, the site uses crowdfunding for article topics, and blogs make it possible to talk about taboo topics and allow people to connect with each other. In 2016, she made her first attempt to raise funds directly to support the site, compiling the posts (including some that had not yet been published online) into a self-published book called Humans of Bombay. She said in an interview with Khaleej Times,
We not only raised around Rs 5 crore for acid attack victims but also for daughters of sex workers, children in need of bone marrow transplants, etc. ”
As of 2021, the site has over 1 million Facebook fans and over 2 million Instagram followers.
