The Prodigal Daughter returns in ABC’s all-new series, Changing gears!
On Monday, December 30, ABC released the first trailer for its upcoming sitcom starring Kat Dennings and Tim Allen, titled Changing gears.
The new series follows Matt (Allen), a “hard-headed, widower who owns a classic car restoration shop,” but when his estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two children return to his home, “the real restoration begins,” according to the series. . logline reads.
Along with Dennings and Allen, who returns to the sitcom in the new series, other cast members include Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

“Is that my GTO? I built that thing 15 years ago and someone stole it,” exclaims Matt as the battered car pulls into his garage. When his daughter gets out of the car with her kids and “Hey Dad,” he jokes, “And there’s a thief.”
At Matt’s place, he and Riley confront each other about the last time they broke up. When he notes that the last time she left the house, she “turned around and gave me a double bird,” Riley sighs and adds, “I was 18 — a double bird is how I ended all our conversations.”
“I’m crawling home because I’m broke and I need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like,” Riley admits in a candid chat with Matt.

“You can stay here,” he says to which she replies in shock, “Really? Because I haven’t changed much!”
Despite their willingness to make amends, the dynamics of Matt and Riley’s relationship prove to be even more difficult.
“Can we try talking to each other like sane adults?” she asks as Matt quips, “Have you been watching the news lately? It’s not a thing anymore.”

The father-daughter duo reflects on how Riley’s mother “made the connection between you and me possible” before her death.
“She was our bridge. Maybe we could build our own bridge?” Riley says, holding out an olive branch.
“Okay, and then if I want to do something you don’t like, you just look at the roof above your head and say, ‘Okay,'” he replies, and Riley interjects, “I’m not sure you understand how bridges work.”
