Kate Beckinsale took time out on Thanksgiving to honor those she’s lost.
On Thursday, Nov. 28, Beckinsale shared an Instagram video of herself rearranging and poring over photos of her late father Richard, stepfather Roy Battersby and her late cat while the iconic Beatles song “In My Life” played in the background.
Beckinsale’s father Richard died in 1979, her stepfather Battersby died in January and her cat Clive died in June 2023.
“Gratitude for the powerful people, both two-legged and four-legged, that I’ve loved and been loved by, all of whom I’ve watched die,” Beckinsale wrote in the caption of her post. “And to my warrior mother and warrior daughter. Don’t feel bad if Thanksgiving makes you more aware of what you’ve lost and the fear of loss and if you have that in you, maybe try to see absolute gratitude and joy for what you have and have had these beings in life.”
The Canary Black the actress said in her description that it can be difficult “to feel gratitude for what and who you lose and strangely, other people telling you to feel grateful that you have your memories is often infuriating.”
“But honoring my fallen, my struggle, my deepest loves, today is right,” she wrote. “Painful, but right.”

Beckinsale announced the death of her stepfather Battersby on Instagram in January. Battersby was a British television director known for directing series such as Inspector Morse, A touch of frost and Between the lines. “I have no words yet,” she wrote at the time of Battersby’s death.

The actress’ biological father, Richard Beckinsale, died at the age of 31 in 1979 from a heart attack. Kate paid separate tribute to him in an Instagram post in March 2024. “This is my first year without any father figure in a long time,” she described in the post, written three months after Battersby’s death.

In a Nov. 28 Instagram caption, Kate thanked her mother Judy Loe for sending her flowers, seen in the video, as well as her own daughter, Lily Sheen, as she reflected on the nature of grieving during the holidays.
“Thank you mom for sending me these beautiful flowers despite everything you’re going through and to my daughter for making me so proud it takes my breath away,” she wrote. “Happy Thanksgiving and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t feel thankful. It’s in there.”
