Derek’s condition worsened last week
Derek, a former lobbyist, was rushed to hospital last week.
The 56-year-old suffered a heart attack in the latest setback in his brave long-running battle.
Following the news, Kate’s colleagues sent her messages of support as she sat by the bedside of her seriously ill husband.
On Tuesday, Smooth FM Breakfast host Jenni Falconer told listeners “he doesn’t look like he’s doing well”.
Jenni said: “On behalf of everyone here at Smooth, we send lots of love and Smooth’s best wishes to our very own Kate Garraway.
“Kate’s husband Derek, as we all know, has been struggling with long-term damage since suffering from Covid and it’s not looking good at the moment, it’s not looking good.
“Sending lots of love to Kate, Derek and family… especially at this time of year.”
Last week, friends and family were alerted that Derek’s condition was deteriorating.
A source said: “Everyone is praying for a miracle.
“Derek suffered a massive heart attack earlier this week, which has left him fighting for his life again.
“It was sudden and a shock because he was so well and in great spirits, looking forward to Christmas at home with his family.
“This failure was a big blow. Kate is with him 24 hours a day and wants him to win this latest battle for his life.”
Derek was first rushed to hospital with Covid in March 2020, before spending 13 months in hospital after falling into a coma and being put on a ventilator.
Since then he has suffered from ongoing health problems, with brain inflammation, kidney failure and damage to his liver and pancreas – as well as difficulty breathing without assistance.
Last February, Kate and Derek flew to Mexico for a ground-breaking medical trial before two further trips to specialist clinics in a last-ditch effort to help him lead a normal life.
Derek — whose days were mostly filled with meetings, trips to the hospital and sleep — was the subject of two critically acclaimed documentaries fronted by Kate.
In June, Kate was awarded an MBE and Derek joined her at Windsor Castle for the award.
