Kate Kennedy News

When meeting Taoiseach Leo Varadkar during the St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Washington, US Vice President Kamala Harris brought up Duleek’s Kate Kennedy.

It happened just a week after Claire D. Cronin, the US ambassador to Ireland, unveiled a bust to honour the extraordinary accomplishments of a local woman who made history at the turn of the 20th century when her tenacious campaigning convinced the San Francisco Board of Education to institute equal pay for equal work.

Kate Kennedy lived and died in Oakland, where Kamala Harris is from. The vice president noted that thousands of Irish emigrants travelled to California during the Gold Rush in the middle of the 19th century.

“The Kate Kennedy story is one of my favourites. She was born in County Meath and headed the Equal Pay for Equal Work movement in California in 1874. And of course, we here in the United States just celebrated Equal Pay Day last week — or last week,” she remarked.

And as many of you are aware, I spent the majority of my career in San Francisco, a city with a long history of Irish pride. And I’ll add that the history and culture of the United States have been influenced by the Irish and early immigrants.

A bus bearing Kate Kennedy’s name was unveiled in Duleek, where she was born, on International Women’s Day a week earlier. County Meath sculptor Betty Newman-Maguire of Carnaross created the bust.

For women, Kate Kennedy was a game-changer. She was the first woman to compete for public office in California, obtained equal pay for equal labour in 1874, and won a crucial legal battle that established the standard for when teachers could and could not be fired from their jobs.

She was decades ahead of her time, but until recently, her accomplishments were essentially unknown in Ireland, according to local journalist Ken Murray.

Kate Kennedy, who was born in 1827 in the township of Gaskinstown, west of Duleek, first attended the local national school, then briefly attended Loreto College in Navan County, Meath, before going to San Francisco in the early months of 1856.

She was hired in 1867 as the principal teacher at North Cosmopolitan Grammar School in San Francisco, where she later discovered that male principals received more pay. She eventually succeeded in getting the California State Legislature to modify the legislation in 1874 by tenacious and relentless campaigning, setting the stage for the legal precedent of equal pay for equal work. Ken Murray claims that there will be other public tributes to Kate Kennedy after this one.
