Kate Winslet on Being ‘Brave’ with Nudity: I Don’t ‘Waste Precious Energy on Criticizing My Physical Self’

Kate Winslet takes a bold approach to shooting nude scenes.

While Winslet, 47, spoke with Vogue magazine for an interview he conducted before the Screen Actors Guild went on strike in July about her new World War II drama Lee, including some nudity scenes.

“I know that you shouldn’t waste precious energy criticizing yourself,” she said. “I think it’s better for every woman to simply say: I believe in myself. It doesn’t matter what other people think; this is me — let’s get on with it.”

Leein which the Oscar winner plays model-turned-war photographer Lee Miller, includes scenes in which Winslet recreates Miller’s famous topless photograph.

“You know I had to be really freaking brave about letting my body be the softest version of itself and not hiding from it,” Winslet said.

“And believe me, people on our team would say, ‘Maybe you just want to sit down,'” she added. ‘And I would say, ‘Why? [Because of] a piece of flesh you can see? No, that’s how it will be!’ ”

“I think it probably stems from being subjected to the most terrible scrutiny and judgment, and, in fact, I would go so far as to say bullying, by the mainstream media when I was in my 20s,” Winslet said.

Lee, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, also stars Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Marion Cotillard, Josh O’Connor and Andy Samberg. Winslet plays Miller, who applied for Vogue throughout the Second World War.

A spokesperson for the actress told PEOPLE last September that Winslet suffered a fall while on location in Croatia.

Although she did not suffer serious injuries, a spokesperson said Winslet “slipped and was taken to hospital as a production-required precaution”. Winslet continued filming as planned after the incident.

Lee it doesn’t yet have a US release date set, although Sky Cinema plans to release the film in the UK, according to Diversity.
