Kate Winslet Recalls Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon’s Failed The Holiday Auditions: ‘That’s Bad’

Leading people in Rest could look very different!

During a recent visit The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonone of the stars of the 2006 film, Kate Winslet, recalled hosts Jimmy Fallon and Robert Downey Jr. auditioning for the comedy classic.

“I remember [it] extremely well,” said Winslet, 48. “We were told … well, I thought it was just a reading, like a fun script reading. I didn’t know you were auditioning for that role.”

She specifically told Fallon, 49, about his rehearsal: “I’m so sorry you didn’t get it. And I’m sorry if I happened to be mean to you in any way or rude. I don’t think I was — just checking.”

After Fallon assured her that she was “so good” to him, Winslet continued: “You were really sick and you were obsessively sanitizing your hands. And I was like, ‘Okay, he’s one of those people.’ And then COVID happened and I thought, ‘I’m going to be one of those people!’ ”

Kate Winslet says she is more recognized for Rest From Titanic: ‘It’s annoying’

As for Downey, 58, Winslet revealed that he “did an English accent” during the audition – presumably to play her character Iris’ brother Graham (which eventually went to Jude Law) – but she “thought it was an Australian accent .”

“I thought, ‘That’s bad – that’s not going to work, and who’s going to tell him that sounds terrible?’ said the Oscar winner.

“I think he was Australian accent, and I think it sounded great!” joked Fallon, who lost the part of Iris’ romantic interest, Miles, to Jack Black. “I’m like, ‘This is perfect, but I don’t think the character [of Graham is] should have been Australian.’ ”

“It wasn’t really that great,” Winslet said, as she and the host laughed. “But it’s really nice of you to say that!”

The director of “Praznik” dismissed rumors about an imminent sequel: “I’m sorry, but that’s not true”

Rest follows broken movie trailer producer Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who offers up her Los Angeles mansion to get away for the holidays, before similarly depressed columnist Iris (Winslet) responds, trading in her English country cottage.

During their visits, Amanda falls in love with Iris’ widowed brother Graham (Law, 51), a book editor, while Iris falls out with film composer Miles (Black, 54), a friend of Amanda’s ex.

“Did you know that Rest would be such a cult classic, a big hit movie?” asked Fallon Regime star during her appearance on his show.

“People approach me on the street more about it Rest and episode of Accessories I did that rather than Titanic,” Winslet revealed. “I promise you. Especially for Christmas.”

“And actually what’s so nice is when mothers and daughters come up to me in the store and say, ‘Oh Kate, we just love Rest, it’s our little ritual for Christmas,’ Winslet continued. “It’s something I never would have expected, actually — the kind of mother-daughter bond around a movie like that. It’s very nice. It’s annoying.”
