Kate Winslet deals with what is often discussed Titanic the scene at the door — which, according to her, might not even be the scene at the door.
During a conversation with an Australian talk show Project and promoting her performance in the new Ellen Kuras biopic LeeThe 49-year-old Oscar winner said the “door” featured in the iconic Titanic the scene wasn’t actually a door, but another part of the set.
When asked if there was “room in the door” for actor Leonardo DiCaprio – whose character Jack Dawson held a piece of driftwood after the ship sank – Winslet, who played Rose Dewitt Bukater, said she knew the interviewer would “ask me that question.”

“I thought, ‘He threw it out Titanic question and the next one will ask me for the door.’ I absolutely knew that,” Winslet said. “But, you know, what I will say that’s really interesting is that people are calling it a door. It wasn’t even really a door.”
“It’s a piece of railing, like a step or something, that broke off,” she continued. “Who knows if they will [DiCaprio] I could [fit] there or not. Frankly, I don’t have any insights here that someone else hasn’t already tried to figure out.”

The scene was a topic of discussion among Titanic fans and moviegoers in general since the film’s release in 1997, and some fans on Reddit have also come to the conclusion that the debris was not a door and compared it to an image from inside the film’s title ship.

Titanic director James Cameron also previously commissioned a scientific study to determine if there really was enough room for Jack and Rose on the floating debris, when he and a team of scientists chose two stuntmen to recreate four different scenarios.
“Jack may have survived, but there are a lot of variables,” Cameron, 70, said last year. “I think his thought process was, ‘I’m not going to do one thing to endanger her.’ ”

During a Q&A at the 92nd Street Y for Lee back in September, Winslet shared some additional information about the scene, joking that DiCaprio, 49, probably “got PTSD” from being asked about Titanic moment so many times. Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Winslet also revealed that the water isn’t as deep as it looks on screen.
“So, first of all, I regularly asked, ‘Can I just go pee?’ And then I get up, I get off the door, I go to the edge of the tank, about 20 feet away and I literally have to drop my leg and climb up and back to the door again, it’s scary,” she recalled.
“Anyway, yes. So it was waist-deep. Leo, I’m afraid to say, was on his knees. I shouldn’t say Jimmy Cameron is going to call me anyway,” Winslet joked.
The actress also shared at the time that the cast and crew filmed a scene in an infinity tank, where “water was constantly coming in and you could hear the constant sound of water.” As she explained, everyone is “totally engrossed” in the “last 22 minutes” of the film “because you can hear this sound of water the whole time.”
