Katey Sagal's Children: All About Sarah, Jackson and Esmé

Married… with children Katey Sagal isn’t just an on-screen mom — but the actress has her own children: Sarah, Jackson and Esmé.

Sagal called being a mother “the most selfless thing” she’s ever done. Speaking to CNN in 2009, Smart house star said: “I have never loved anyone the way I love my children. It was an experience that surprised me.”

She continued: “You have your boyfriend, your husband, your friends, but that’s another thing. It’s deeper, and it’s a fantastic—and risky—commitment to love so deeply.”

In October 1991 8 simple rules the star had a stillbirth with her daughter Ruby at almost eight months. During the performance at View In 2017, Sagal opened up about the loss, calling it “difficult” and revealing that she began to recover when a friend comforted her with a message: “‘Sometimes we have these little souls that come in and out [of our lives,] and their mission is complete.’ ”

Sagal welcomed her oldest children, Sarah Grace White and Jackson White, in 1994 and 1996, respectively, with her ex-husband, drummer Jack White, who died in July 2024.

“This guy taught me everything,” Jackson wrote on Instagram to announce his dad’s death. “He was an open book, a fighter, truly the funniest person my sister and I knew. He’s not in pain anymore. I love you dad forever.”

In 2007, Sagal and her current husband, Kurt Sutter, welcomed a daughter, Esmé Louise Sutter.

Now grown, Sagala’s eldest children have followed in her acting footsteps. Sarah got roles NCIS and Grey’s Anatomywhile Jackson starred alongside his mom in the series 2022 Tell me lies.

“It’s a huge relief when your kids say, ‘I want to do what you do,’ and that’s where the natural talent is,” Sagal said. The Hollywood Reporter in 2014.

Sagal and Jack welcomed Sarah on August 7, 1994.

The Sons of Anarchy the actress marked her oldest child’s birthday in 2014 by paying tribute to her “beautiful” child on Instagram. “20 today! Time flies when your heart is full. I love my Sara,” she captioned a picture of her daughter.

Sarah graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio in 2016, where she studied drama, according to Kenyon Collegian.

The year before, she showed off her acting skills on FX Bastard executioner, starring Isabel Kiffin. The series was created by Sara’s stepfather, Kurt, and starred her mother.

Sarah’s acting credits also include Rebel and episode of grey’s anatomy, among others.

In addition to acting, the Kenyon College student also sings. Sarah released her first single titled “Touching” in the fall of 2022 and embarked on a US tour the following summer.

During the interview for The Hollywood Reporter‘with in 2014 Women in entertainment number, Sarah revealed that she writes and sings “because I saw how my mom put so much of herself into her music and acting.”

Jackson James White, 28

Sagal and her ex-husband Jack welcomed Jackson on March 1, 1996.

Like his older sister, Jackson followed in his mother’s acting footsteps, despite Sagal advising him to “do something else.” He told PEOPLE 2022: “I wasn’t allowed to act until I was 18. I had to grow up first.”

While she initially encouraged him to pursue a different profession, Sagal celebrated when her son joined the cast of HBO Mrs. Fletcher, starring Kathryn Hahn 2018 “Proud of him. Boy. Strike…”, Sagal wrote on Instagram at the time.

In 2022, Jackson admitted Esquire that music was what he “always intended to do,” but then he “sort of naturally” switched to acting.

He recalled how he couldn’t focus and was distracted while in his music program at the University of Southern California. However, after auditioning for musicals, Jackson decided to “change” and dropped out of school, but life didn’t slow down. He began two years of “really intensive” acting training before launching his career.

Besides that Mrs. Fletcher, Jackson appeared in The space between with Kelsey Grammer, as well as Michael Bay Emergency and Five Sematary: Bloodlines.

Sagal starred opposite her son Tell me lies, playing his on-screen mother. Jackson described the experience in 2022 The Seattle Times as “crazy”, but remarked that it was “perfect casting”.

He said: “I’m friends with my mother and we had to be extremely passive and aggressive and tense, but it was so fun and exciting to build that relationship and talk to each other like we’d never really talked to each other. ”

Sagal loved working with her son and complimented him in conversation The Seattle Times.

“It was a challenge to leave our very close relationship at the door and take on the extremely toxic dynamic between Stephen and his mom,” she said of their characters on the show. “Jackson shows up fully on set, ready to play, present and collaborative. It was wonderful.”

Esmé Louise Sutter, 17

Sagal became a mom again at the age of 52 when she welcomed Esmé with her husband, Kurt.

The actress’ youngest child was born via surrogate on January 10, 2007. In her memoirs Grace NotesSagal said she was “no longer able to carry a child, given the previous complications.”

Sagal revealed to PEOPLE that she and Kurt “went through the whole IVF process.” While their “embryos weren’t very strong,” they thought, “Let’s try and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”

As she got older, Esmé’s father called her a “sassy little firecracker” on Instagram and added that she was his “greatest teacher” and “greatest love” in another post.

In 2021, the proud dad also took to the social media platform to praise his “amazing” daughter for volunteering at the nonprofit Hollywood Food Coalition.

In her memoir, Sagal spoke about her daughter’s diagnoses of ADHD and “a little bit of dyslexia.” The family has since worked to adjust their routines to best suit Esmé’s needs.
