Maren Morris Reveals Her Dating Rule After Divorce & Says Future Partner Needs to ‘Have Your S— Together’ (Exclusive)

Maren Morris moves on.

The Grammy winner, 34, finalized her divorce from ex-husband Ryan Hurd, 37, in January after nearly six years of marriage. And as she slowly starts dating again, she feels no pressure.

In this week’s issue of PEOPLE magazine, Morris talks about what she learned about herself—and how she came out stronger—through the public split.

“I think pouring yourself into another person is probably not a healthy way to do things. I think it changes expectations and power and entitlement a lot,” she tells PEOPLE. “I just have to put 100 percent into myself, and you really have to be a spectacularly impressive individual to add something to your life because — and I don’t want to sound full of myself — but I’m really, really happy with the life I’ve built.”

Morris — who rose to fame with her breakout country hit “My Church” in 2016 — chronicles the tough year she’s faced on her new EP Interruption.

“I love my career, I love my baby [son Hayes, 4, with Hurd], I love my home, I love my friends,” she says. “These are all things that are important to me, and I did it. I will only let someone into my life if it enhances anything. They cannot be net negative. They cannot exhaust my resources, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Financially, emotionally, spiritually. You really have to be together to be a part of my life at this point.”

After his divorce, Morris – who revealed he is bisexual in June – now has some ground rules when it comes to dating.

“I don’t hide a single part of myself. I feel that I can’t really do that because I’m a public person, semi-public, so everything is on the table, but I also have to guard my heart,” she said. he says. “I think there’s less pressure for anything to spark or happen, it’s just like I’m enjoying dating for the first time. Nothing crazy has happened yet, it’s just mostly been OK, I can still do that I guess, and meet a stranger and connect through conversation. It’s harder than you think.”

And while he says that he is not rushing into anything serious, he is enjoying this new period of life.

“I’m excited. This part of me has the most confidence and just doesn’t take itself too seriously, so this is the perfect time to come out,” adds Morris. “My rules are just that you have to be really spectacular to push me.”

Now about her genre-blurring, deeply personal Interruption record, Morris finds strength in vulnerability as she makes sense of her divorce and its aftermath.

“This feels like an incredible journey of discovery,” she says, “and also the heartbreak of a relationship dying and what fun and joy you find after trauma or tragedy like that.”

Morris, who is currently on the RSVP Redux Tour with son Hayes in tow, credits her group of friends for helping her get through some dark days post-split.

“My friends definitely got me through the worst. Now I just feel like those are the people who, whether I’m in a relationship or not, are the people who are my family,” she says. “I went on a trip a few months ago to Mexico with some girlfriends, and a few of us had gone through divorce or co-parenting, so we all just bonded over it, and it was like: Oh my gosh… – this is what we would should be here. It’s not romantic relationships, our relationships with women and friendships will help us through the years.”
