Katharine McPhee kept a low profile for David Foster’s birthday.
McPhee, 40, and her music producer husband, who turned 75 on Nov. 1, celebrated the milestone at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, Nov. 3. At the Live Nation-Hewitt Silva-produced event featuring McPhee, PEOPLE caught up with american idol alum.
When asked about the birthday shopping for Foster, McPhee said, “I think we kind of stopped doing extravagant things.”
“I bought him, like, a cute sweater and a cute jacket,” she continued, “just things that he’ll look chic in.”
Despite the lack of extravagance, Foster said he appreciates his wife’s gifts. “Oh, she bought me a lot of presents,” he told PEOPLE. “She’s great. She’s been amazing.”

McPhee also celebrated an important birthday this year; the singer turned 40 in March.
“I made it to my 40s,” the star told PEOPLE at Foster’s birthday bash, which featured Kristin Chenoweth, Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson and Michael Bublé. “David didn’t have any conversations about, like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe I’m 75,’ or I said like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe I’m 40. I’m really mourning that.’ No, we didn’t do any of that.”
