Kidnapped by Kathleen Baty
In May 1990, Lawrence Stagner, a former high school classmate, kidnapped his wife Kathleen Gallagher Baty in Menlo Park, California. Before his captor could get Kathleen Baty out of her house, he was able to call the police thanks to a surprise call from her mother. She was quickly rescued and Stagner was arrested. His case was just one of many that resulted in the passage of anti-harassment laws in California. Rescue 911 and Obsessed: Dark Obsessions described the incident in one of their episodes.
Investigation Discovery’s documentary “Killer Cheer: A Very Dangerous Game” tells the story of Kathleen Baty, who endured nearly ten years of bullying and harassment from a former high school classmate who became obsessed with her. The latter tortured Kathleen and her husband even after serving several prison terms, but fortunately they were released. According to sources, Larry was once arrested outside his apartment in Marina del Rey brandishing a .357 magnum handgun. She served him a restraining order out of fear for his safety and trying to find some peace. She later married Greg Baty, a football player for the Miami Dolphins, and the two settled in Menlo Park. However, he was able to track her down, leading to her arrest for violating a court-ordered restraining order to keep him away from her. Because of this, he was arrested for the fourth time in 1990 alone.
According to court records, Larry may have received probation for the misdemeanors after receiving short prison terms after each arrest. But even after diligently adhering to court-ordered outpatient mental health treatment plans, he persisted in stalking and harassing Kathleen. The most serious attack, however, occurred three days after he completed his three-month term in 1990. When Kathleen arrived at her Menlo Park home while she was still working as a real estate agent, Larry was already there.
He tied her hands, said he was taking her to Mendocino County, and brandished a hunting knife. SWAT and neighborhood cops showed up just as he was leading her out to her car. According to sources, Larry’s probation officer alerted police after he skipped a scheduled meeting. Although Kathleen managed to escape, he managed to elude the police for 11 hours before being arrested. The 32-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted kidnapping, not kidnapping.
