She married her ex-husband, Gregor, at 25.Did she realise back then that she was a lesbian? “It wasn’t at the forefront. I was already such an outsider in Montrose, and I think adding being a lesbian on top of that would have just been incomprehensible to me.”

Kathleen Stock News

According to the press announcement for Prof. Kathleen Stock’s new book, she envisions a time when gender-critical feminists and advocates for transgender rights work together to advance certain political goals. She does, however, admit that it currently looks fanciful. She believes that the book Material Girls establishes her position, even though she is aware that many people will find it repulsive.

Do trans women count as women? is the main question Stock, a professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex, claims to address. This question is offensive to many people.

Whatever else about her opinions is debatable, she is undoubtedly correct when she claims that this issue has developed toxicity. Her issue, though, stems at least in part from the fact that many individuals take every possible precaution to avoid responding to it. Few sceptics express their doubts openly because they are afraid, according to her. “I’m afraid not,” is a psychologically challenging response to give.

Stock is careful to emphasise that she is not anti-trans and that she understands the sentiment that many individuals have of not being in the “right” body. The institutionalisation of the notion that gender identification is all that matters and that how you identify automatically gives all the rights of that sex is what she claims to be opposed to. And she thinks that idea is becoming more widely accepted in universities and the general public.

There is a taboo about stating this, but I do, she asserts. People are free to disagree with me if they like, but this is what I believe.

The controversy surrounding gender identification is directly related to free expression, particularly on college campuses, thus that last statement is also laden. She claims that campuses are a minefield for individuals want to speak these problems, and she has received calls requesting that her university fire her. She therefore backs the government’s contentious proposals for a free speech bill, which opponents such as English PEN, Article 19, and Index on Censorship have claimed will have the opposite impact.

They said in a joint letter that the law “may have the inverse effect of further restricting what is deemed “acceptable” speech on campus and introducing a chilling effect both on the content of what is taught and the scope of academic research exploration.”
