Rukka Sombolinggi is the first woman to serve as the Secretary General of AMAN whose full form is Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara. It is the world’s largest organization of indigenous peoples. It represents more than 2,200 communities and over 15 million people across Indonesia.
She was elected to this position in 2017. She worked as AMAN’s Deputy Secretary General for Public Advocacy, Law and Politics. Rukka is Toraja from Sulawesi. She is also a farmer, scientist, leader and activist.

Rukka Sombolinggi is a Torajan who belongs to the highlands of Sulawesi, a starfish-shaped island the size of Florida. She is known for her fiery oratory and commitment to indigenous rights movements. Rukka was born in 1973 of the Toraja ethnic group into a family that had been involved in the indigenous rights movement since the early 1990s. She was born in Sangalla, a village in the highlands of Sulawesi. She is 50 years old and her parents hosted the meeting that took place in 1993.

The meeting is often cited as the beginning of the movement in Indonesia. Because of the meeting, the Network of defenders of the rights of indigenous peoples was formed. This network became one of the main groups that convened the first Congress of Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia in March 1999. Rukka Sombolinggi completed a degree in agriculture at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, Sulawesi. She holds a master’s degree in political science from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. At Chulalongkorn University, Rukka wrote her thesis on the political participation of indigenous women in Indonesia. Rukka is married to Mansur Labada with whom she has 4 children. Her husband is a fellow activist and leader of the Moronene ethnic group in Southeast Sulawesi. Rukka and Mansur got married in 1994. Rukka’s husband was one of the founders of JAPHAM and AMAN. When she was married to Mansur, he forced her not to go out to earn money because he wanted his wife to stay at home and take care of their children, but she had to negotiate with him and convince him that she would take care of their children and her work managing her time.
Rukka Sombolinggi with her four children When Rukka was pregnant with her third child in August 1998, her husband was sent to prison for leading a resistance against the eviction of the Moronene people who were removed from their ancestral land in the Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park by the people local authorities and security forces. Now Rukku faced a difficult situation because she had to raise their children alone while fighting for the release of her husband and for the rights of the Moronene people. For all this, she was supported by her parents, friends and fellow activists. He lives with his wife and their four children in a modest house in Bogor, West Java. He tries to balance his life between family and business life. Rukka Sombolinggi’s height is 5 feet 2 inches. Her weight is about 53 kg. He has blue eyes and fair skin. She was a member of the executive council of the Pact of Asian Indigenous Peoples from 2009 to 2012. She was elected Secretary General of AMAN in 2017, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
