Katie shared on her Instagram stories on Saturday, September 7 that she had their initials inscribed on her wedding band in memory of her two brothers, who died in a bike accident on August 29, just one day before her wedding. to be held.

She shared a close-up of her new wedding ring in a black-and-white photo that read “J & M.” She was seen holding the ring with the new inscription between her fingers as she held it up to the camera.

Following the news of their deaths, Katie and her fiance Devin Joyce postponed their wedding. She noted that her brothers loved her fiance “more than he will ever know” as she re-shared his tribute post on Instagram.

“They were so excited for us to get married. When the day comes, they will be dancing and celebrating more than anyone,” she wrote in a Sept. 3 Instagram Stories message.

She also paid tribute to the unwavering “bond” between Johnny, who was a hockey player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, their brother Matthew and the rest of their family in a separate Instagram post, alongside photos of the family over the years.

Matthew and Johnny were killed around 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, when a suspected drunken driver hit them while trying to pass another vehicle, New Jersey State Police told PEOPLE. They were cycling in their hometown, where they were to serve as best men at Katie’s wedding, when the incident happened.

Police have since identified Sean M. Higgins, 43, as the driver. He was arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto, according to police. He is currently in prison.
