Welcome to The Blueprint, where we take apart the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and recreate them, piece by piece.
Katie Holmes has earned her fashion stripes—at least, in my opinion, she has.
I didn’t think it was possible to pack so many celebrity-coded elements into one outfit, but then there is Dawson’s Creek the actress, 45, did it with ease. In late September, the star was photographed in a butterscotch striped sweater, which was similar to the one Gwyneth Paltrow showed off earlier in the month. Keeping with the cozy theme, she wrapped herself in a seasonal style that Jennifer Hudson just wore: sweater pants.
She also carried a tall bag (no surprise there!) and added blue Mary Janes, which I happily swapped out for my sneakers. I honestly began to wonder if she was going to set a new Mary Jane wearing record? Because I’ve lost count of how many times she’s been seen in comfortable shoes.

Zesica Oversized Striped Pullover Sweater, $26 with coupon and Prime
Amazon
$59 $26 on Amazon
This pullover sweater is the closest to me. As with her, the cuffs are ribbed, the neckline is slightly rounded, and dark blue is the dominant color. The hem at the bottom is a lot thicker than the Holmes one though, which I actually think would sit nicer and not fold or bunch up in weird ways.
Viottiset 2 Piece Pullover and Wide Leg Lounge Set, $27 with coupon and Prime
Amazon
$49 $27 on Amazon
Instead of putting together a makeshift monochrome outfit, just buy this two-piece set that will ensure the top and bottom match perfectly.
Rekayl Mary Jane flats, $25 with Prime
Amazon
$30 $25 on Amazon
Since getting a few pairs of flats, I’ve noticed that the pointy toe pairs seem too professional for my taste. I wear round toe styles most of the time and am always on the lookout for more of these.
BCBG structured bag
Nordstrom rack
$98 $35 at Nordstromrack.com
When the bag is too big, the contents can accumulate quickly. To keep things to a minimum, a mid-sized bag like this one from BCBG will keep things under control. It also has a unique curved shape that immediately made me draw comparisons to those of more expensive brands.
Kirundo Striped Crew Neck Sweater, $23 from Prime
Amazon
$30 $23 on Amazon
If a pair of nautical navy shorts and a striped sweater were combined into one, this would be the end result thanks to the timeless pattern and shiny buttons. Also, a sweater can’t get much warmer than a turtleneck, so this is one of those that will break out during those single digit temperatures.
Gap CashSoft Shaker-Stitch Sweater Pants
Gap
$80 $63 at Gap.com
With an elasticated waistband, loose silhouette and “supersoft cotton blend” fabric, according to the brand, I’m not sure they could be any more comfortable. They are available in five colors and sizes up to XXL, plus regular, tall and small inseams.
Franco Sarto Tinsley Mary Jane Flat, $59 with Prime
Amazon
$115 $59 on Amazon
In addition to blue, Holmes also reached for silver accessories. In fact, she wore these exact Franco Sarto shoes last month. And bonus points: one customer described them as “the most comfortable non-athletic walking shoe ever.”
Kattee Large Tote, $52 with Prime
Amazon
$70 $52 on Amazon
Instead of dealing with low-quality zippers that snag on the rails and cheapen the look of the bag, I prefer picks like this one with magnetic snaps.
Gap CashSoft Crew Neck Sweater
Gap
$70 $34 at Gap.com
“Cashmere is soft, but not the price of cashmere” is how one customer described this striped crewneck tee on sale.
Grapent Knit Wide Leg Pants, $23 from Prime
Amazon
$28 $23 on Amazon
Even at full price, these wide leg pants are one of the most affordable routes available. But just know, the brand recommends hand washing.
Zesica Striped V-Neck Oversized Sweater, $29 with coupon and Prime
Amazon
$40 $29 on Amazon
This V-neck sweater comes with a stylish polo neck – something we’ve seen on Julia Roberts, Joanna Gaines and Jennifer Garner.
Apartments Vibi Venezia Mary Jane
Anthropologie
$155 at Anthropologie
If bright blue is calling you, Anthropologie has this two-tone pair that’s an impressive $275 less than the $430 Mary Janes Holmes was seen wearing this spring. Unlike the others, these shoes are completely flat, without any heel — so they can be a blessing for those who regularly deal with heel pain.
Foxlover Leather Large Tote, $38 with Prime
Amazon
$76 $38 on Amazon
“This bag is buttery soft and lovely, not to mention, [it’s] comfortable to hold,” said one five-star reviewer. “I have so many expensive designer handbags, but I absolutely love this one and use it every day.”
Dream Pairs Mary Jane Ballet Flat, $23 with Prime
Amazon
$50 $23 on Amazon
Colorful shoes are just a little too far from the wheelhouse of my wardrobe. But black? They are always neutrals which, in my opinion, will never be “in”.
