Keanu Reeves surprised fans with a cameo in the film Severance pay premiere!
The actor, 60, was heard in the first episode of Season 2 of the Apple TV+ thriller as the voice of the building in the animated video “Lumon Listens” shown to the Macrodata Refinement department. And although it was easy to miss, series creator Dan Erickson recently explained in an interview with collider why Reeves got the part.
“All I can say is we’ve talked to a few different people for the role,” Erickson said. “We always wanted it to be someone that people had certain associations with, but also, it had to be a very warm presence. The Lumon building is very friendly in the context of this video, there is a friendship towards that particular voice and a heart towards that particular voice.”

Reeves’ Severance pay performed shortly after Reeves made his voice acting debut as Shadow in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He told PEOPLE at the premiere in December that he enjoyed playing the role with intensity.
“Shadow is such an intense character, and I like that he was intense, but he has a good heart, so I have to play super intense,” he noted. “I want revenge, but then also be sensitive and try to show my good side.”

In the past, Reeves was best known for his on-camera roles in Matrix and John Wickwho celebrated the 10th anniversary of his first film last year. When co-director Chad Stahelski was asked in October 2024 if the film could exist without Reeves, he quickly told PEOPLE “no.”
“The stoicism that John Wick exhibits is really a big part of who Keanu is,” Stahelski continued. “You have to see Keanu on set. I know everyone hears the stories, but he always comes early. He’s always the first one there [and] the last to go.”
He went on to say that Reeves, who is executive producing the fourth film in 2023, is “curious” about every part of the production process and “doesn’t try to over-produce or over-produce or correct the direction. He just wants to know.”
“[He] he loves the property, he loves the character, he loves the business,” he added. “That kind of involvement – that kind of love – you can’t help but put your own DNA in.”
