Keke Palmer Gave Darius Jackson ‘a Lot of Chances’ Before Restraining Order Filing: Source (Exclusive)

The actress was granted a temporary restraining order against Jackson this week, along with temporary sole physical and legal custody of their son

Keke Palmer, who was recently granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, has given him “a lot of chances” in the past, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Earlier this week, the actress, 30, was also granted temporary sole physical and legal custody of 8-month-old Leodis, the son she shares with Jackson, 29, after she filed for a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson and sought custody of their child.

Now, a source tells PEOPLE that Palmer “did what she had to do,” despite “working hard to get an amicable split.”

“She gave him a lot of opportunities to do the right thing,” they added. “Keke tried so hard to reach an amicable separation and agreement [custody].”

“She had to prioritize her safety and the safety of her baby,” the source continues. “She wants the best for Leo. She didn’t want him to get to this point. But she did what she had to do.”

In documents reviewed by PEOPLE, Palmer filed for full physical and legal custody of Leodis in a Los Angeles court on Thursday, detailing multiple allegations of physical abuse. She also filed for a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson.

In a statement attached to the California Supreme Court filing Thursday, Palmer said that on Nov. 5, “Darius entered my home without my knowledge or consent, threatened me, then physically assaulted me — pounced on my neck, punched me, threw me over the couch and stealing my phone when I told him I was going to call the police.”

The filing included screenshots of what appeared to be security footage of a male punching a female over a sofa. Palmer also alleged that Jackson abused her multiple times over a two-year period. The filing states that there were “numerous instances of physical violence, including hitting and grabbing around the neck, descriptions of Darius destroying my personal property, including agendas and prescription glasses, throwing my belongings into the street, throwing my car keys to prevent me from untying myself, hitting in front of our son, swearing about me to our son, threatening to kill himself with a gun if I left him, harassment and other physical and emotional abuse.”

In addition to granting Palmer temporary sole physical and legal custody of Leo, a Los Angeles County judge responded to the emergency request by issuing a temporary restraining order this week. The order says Jackson must stay at least 100 yards away from Palmer and Leodis, as well as any daycare or school set up for the child.

Leodis’ father, according to the temporary order, is not allowed to have visits with his son. A hearing has been scheduled for December 5, which will determine further action regarding the temporary arrangement.

Representatives and attorneys for Palmer did not respond to PEOPLE’s numerous requests for comment this week. Jackson’s rep had no comment when contacted by PEOPLE on Friday.

The fitness instructor appeared to address the situation in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday. Sharing a photo of himself holding his son, he wrote: “Love you son. See you soon.”

Palmer and her ex-boyfriend, who welcomed a son in February, have gone through public difficulties in their relationship in recent months, most notably when Jackson publicly criticized the actress in July for wearing a skin-tight black bodysuit under a see-through dress while watching Usher perform at his residence in Las Vegas.

“It’s clothes… you’re a mom,” he wrote on Xu at the time.

However, in September, the actress included a series of photos of herself, Jackson and Leodis in New York.

The couple also celebrated Palmer’s 30th birthday together in August, and Jackson posted a tribute to her on X to celebrate her.

“Happy birthday to a unique being,” Jackson wrote in an Aug. 26 post. “I hope your thirties bring you much joy and success!”
