Keke Palmer On Setting ‘Personal Boundaries’ Around What She Shares About Her Life Now: ‘I’ve Learned A lot’ (Exclusive)

Keke Palmer is no longer an open book — and for good reason.

The star and influencer, 30, who recently headlined the Black Magic Reimagined conference on October 1, is known for being unapologetically honest. She has long shared details from her private world, whether it’s her life as a mother to son Leodis, 7 months, or her relationship with his dad, Darius Jackson. But now Palmer tells PEOPLE that she needs to change how transparent she is willing to be in public.

“The thing about social media is that it can easily be a place where you can work, but it also blurs the line between what’s work and what’s real life,” says Palmer. “I can’t control how everyone’s going to take something. And I also have my own personal boundaries for what I feel like I want out there or what I want to give people a chance to talk about.”

In recent months there has been particular speculation about the star’s relationship with Jackson, who made headlines when he publicly criticized the outfit Palmer wore to watch Usher perform at his Las Vegas residency in July, writing at the time on X (formerly Twitter) , “It’s clothes tho.. you’re mom.”

Since the rumored drama, the two have been posting outings together, including lunching for her 30th birthday and attending Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour in Las Angeles. Last week, the actress and musician displayed photos of him and their son Leo during a sweet slideshow as part of their Big Boss Tour at Webster Hall in New York City.

Despite this, Palmer has consistently dodged questions about their relationship status since this summer, most notably telling Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush-Hager to “mind your own business” when asked about Jackson during a recent episode Today with Hoda and Jenna.

Palmer now says, “I think I’ve learned a lot of different things along the way in terms of what my boundaries are, what I’m willing to share and what I’m not willing to share.” She adds, “I think it’s hard to defend yourself in front of people who don’t know you at all or who already have so many preconceived notions about you.”

These days he is not subject to any external pressure. “You end up in a position where you’re like, ‘Well, wait a minute. Let me just do myself and not be so reactive to other people,'” she says. “Let’s not let my choice be so much a reaction to how other people treat me.”
