Keke Palmer looks back on the roles that made her a household name.
Appearing on Toasthosted by Claudia & Jackie Oshry, the 31-year-old actress discussed some of the parts that helped her break into the industry. In an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, Palmer made the admission Barber shop II and Akeelah and the bee, before I look back on my time on TV.
“What put Keke Palmer on the map like boooom, was True Jackson, Vice President. My life changed after that, baby,” she said of the Nickelodeon show.
Claudia noted that Palmer also starred in a Disney movie Jump inand how the young stars of the time were rare not to work exclusively with one of the two networks.
“Disney is really amazing when it comes to, not just the storytelling you see on the screen, but the storytelling within the company. They’re storytelling through marketing, through their employees. They have pins and needles in the office,” Palmer said.

“They’re literally like the whole universe and I think that’s a really good feeling when you’re a kid because there’s no end to the magic. There’s an element of being a part of it that’s really, really fun.”
Palmer later noted that “Disney has a way of making you feel like, ‘I have to be here. This is something you want to be a part of.’ ”
When it came to Nickelodeon, “their pay was really great,” Palmer revealed, adding that the environment was “kind of like ‘Come in and get this check.’ It wasn’t about making it necessarily exciting.”

“One day we were doing this big promotional thing about all the new shows that were coming on Nickelodeon. We had to be sleazy. Obviously when you shoot things, you don’t just shoot once. You shoot multiple times,” she said.
Explaining that she was in her “weave era,” Palmer continued, “When I tell you they smeared me, then they had to wash it all off. I was under the dryer for hours, only to be licked again? Oh baby, I hated that slime after that it was too much.”
